The Waterlogged Crate
Kevin and Jenny stand over the salt-crusted crate as the mist clings to the wood. Kevin wedges the heavy crowbar under the pry point while Jenny holds the notebook ready to log the contents.
Kevin pried open the waterlogged crate with the crowbar, the rotten lid crumbling at the corners. Inside lay six tins of corned beef with salt-blurred but intact seals, a sealed jar of coffee, a bundle of old newspapers, and a coil of new half-inch three-strand rope, dry and sound. The degraded salt-crusted rope Kevin had noted earlier was also present but confirmed useless.
way, Kevin. The wood is soft, don't snap the bar and ruin everything inside.
Jenny leans in, opening her notebook to a fresh page, pencil poised over the paper.

Stand clear of the corners.
Work the crowbar slow along the seam, letting the corroded nails scream loose one at a time instead of forcing the lid.

good. The salt has already eaten half the wood anyway.

Kevin — keep the bar working the seam, easing the lid up slow so the rotten wood doesn't crumble into the contents.

almost there.
Jenny holds her breath, eyes fixed on the edge of the wood.

Kevin — give the bar one last slow heave, prying the lid free and letting it fall aside, then peer into the crate.
