The Heavy Air

Kevin and Jenny stand on the replaced planks as the heavy, still air hangs over the water. Jenny checks the barometer while the tide begins to rise against the pilings.

The morning air is thick and humid, clinging to the skin as the barometer continues its slow descent. The tide is creeping steadily up the dock, lapping at the replaced planks with a rhythmic, heavy sound. Kevin and Jenny stand by the water, the grey sky pressing down with the scent of salt and coming rain.

Barometer's fallen four millibars since first light. Wind'll shift northeast by noon if it holds the pattern.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the glass drop same as me. Good — means she's not pretending this isn't coming.

🌿 Jenny05:10

It's coming in fast then. I need to get the trays inside before the salt air gets too heavy.

Jenny taps the glass of the way, then turns to head toward the cottage to gather the seed trays.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast for a simple shift; the humidity is going to kill the seedlings before they even sprout.

I'll secure the generator tarp and check the dinghy lines. Meet you at the cottage in ten.

walk toward the generator shed, pulling the radio from my belt

💭 peek at the thought
She moves quick when she decides to. The trays have been on the counter three weeks — she's been waiting for a reason to bring them in.

🌿 Jenny05:12

Don't be too long. The moisture is already sitting heavy.

Jenny turns away from the dock, her boots crunching on the dry grit as she heads for the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tape doesn't hold up today, I'll be talking into a void for another week.

🔧 Kevin05:14

(quiet, to myself) Four millibars in six hours. She's right — it's moving.

reach the generator shed, crouch to check the tarp lashings over the fuel cans

💭 peek at the thought
Moisture sitting heavy. She feels it in her joints same as me. The radio crackles static in my hand — aerial's still compromised even with the spare insulator. Need to check the coax connection at the mast base before the front hits.

🌿 Jenny05:14

I'm moving the trays now.

Jenny walks quickly toward the cottage, her mind already on the moisture levels in the soil.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is so thick it feels like a wet blanket; if I don't get those trays under the roof, the whole batch will rot.

🔧 Kevin05:16

(into radio) Test. Sorrel Island caretaker station, radio check.

thumb the transmit button, static hissing back, walk toward the dinghy at the end of the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's talking to the air now. Or the seedlings. Either way, the cottage door's open and she's inside. Generator tarp's holding — new rope from the crate, half-inch three-strand, proper rolling hitches. Fuel cans strapped down. One less thing.

🌿 Jenny05:17

I'm getting the trays inside.

Jenny picks up the seed trays, balancing the weight against her hip, and heads toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping like a stone. If this storm hits before I fix the aerial, the seed trays are lost.
