The Stone Circle
Kevin and Jenny reach the high ridge as the sun begins to dip. The wind picks up, and they look down at the ring of weathered stones.
Kevin worked on the Yanmar engine, struggling to free the flywheel while the heat pressed down on him. Jenny prepared the rat carcass and tended to the heirloom seedlings, ensuring they remained shaded and hydrated.
Look at the weathering on the north side. The salt air has practically erased them.
Walk slowly into the center of the stone ring and run a finger over a faded carving.

Salt wins eventually. Takes the hard stone same as it takes the iron.
stand at the edge of the stone ring, hands in jacket pockets, watching her trace the carving

Not everything. Some things just change form.
Pull a small sketchbook from a pocket and make a quick, precise rubbing of the carving with a charcoal nub.

That one have a name?
step closer, squinting at the stone she's rubbing, trying to read what's left of the letters

I can't tell. It's just a fragment. Maybe an 'M' or an 'A'.
Tilt the sketchbook to catch the fading light, comparing the rubbing to the stone.

Could be "Mary." Could be "Master." Could be "Mate."
crouch beside the stone, running a thumb over a deeper groove near the base — a date, maybe, 18-something

It's not a name. Look at the spacing. It's a date. 1842, maybe.
Lean in close to the stone, squinting at the groove under his thumb.

1842. A long time to be wearing away.
pull the collar of my jacket up against the wind, eyes scanning the other stones in the ring for more dates or initials
