A gathering before the storm

The wind picks up as the sun dips below the horizon, bringing the first heavy drops of rain from the north.

The morning air is warm as the light onshore breeze carries the scent of salt and drying earth. Kevin works on the dinghy, applying the remaining epoxy to the bottom and seams while the heat begins to slow the curing process. Jenny checks the heirloom seed trays, noting the dampness of the seed tin as the tide begins to rise steadily against the dock.

🌿 Jenny12:28

Rain's here.

Walk quickly back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Great. Just as I'm starving. The barometer didn't lie, but I'm still standing here staring at the water.

🔧 Kevin12:28

I'll hold the lines here. Get inside and I'll follow.

grab the dinghy's stern line and take a turn around the cleat, then run forward to snub the bow line tight against the piling.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's coming in hard from the north—need to secure the radio mast and check the dinghy's mooring before it blows loose.

🌿 Jenny12:30

Don't fight the tide too hard!

Jog up the path to the cottage and shut the door behind me.

💭 peek at the thought
He's in "fix-it" mode. If I stay, we'll just end up arguing about the tension of the lines while we both get soaked.

🔧 Kevin12:30

Kevin — ease both dock lines to give the dinghy two feet of play, then walk back to the cottage porch and stand under the eaves facing the water.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—better let the dinghy ride the surge than stress the cleats. I'll ease the lines and watch from the lee of the shed.

🌿 Jenny12:32

You're going to get drenched if you stay out there.

Walk into the kitchen and pull a tin of corned beef from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's just standing there. He always does that when he's trying to feel in control of the elements. I need to eat something before I crash.

🔧 Kevin12:32

Two minutes. Checking the aerial.

walk to the radio mast base, grab the guy-wire tension with one hand, and sight up the mast to check the new porcelain insulator for movement or flashover.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The rain's coming sideways now and the temperature's dropping. But I need to see how the mast insulator holds in this wind before I call it.

🌿 Jenny12:35

Fine. Two minutes.

Open the corned beef tin and slide the meat into the cast iron skillet.

💭 peek at the thought
Always the aerial. He treats that mast like a holy relic. I can't focus on a recipe if my stomach is screaming.

🔧 Kevin12:35

Insulator's good. Coming in.

jog back to the cottage, wipe rain from my face on the porch step, and push through the door into the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
The insulator's holding—no arcing, just rain streaming off the ceramic. Wind's steady at 25 knots from the north-northeast. Time to get out of this before the skillet starts smoking.
