The Pressure Drops

Kevin stands over the dinghy transom, checking the barometer as the mercury continues to fall. Jenny sits on the replaced planks, sorting the heirloom seedlings while the wind picks up from the south.

Kevin mixed epoxy and coated the port gunwale of the dinghy, while Jenny transplanted pepper seedlings into the garden. A seabird chick fell from a cliff ledge near the dock. Both completed their tasks before the weather shifted.

🌿 Jenny12:38

It's falling, isn't it? Don't let the weather scare you into forgetting we have a window for the peppers.

Carefully lift a tray of pepper seedlings from the dock planks, checking the root balls for firmness.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessed with that barometer. The pressure is dropping, but the seedlings can't wait for a perfect window.

🔧 Kevin12:39

Window's open till noon. Barometer holds above 1010 past that, we're good for the coat. You transplant, I'll mix.

walk to the epoxy tub and stir stick, wipe condensation off the lid, pop it open and check consistency

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the barometer too. Smart. The drop's steady — not a squall line, but something building slow and deep. We've got maybe six hours before the chop gets ugly. Peppers first, then I coat the port side before the humidity kills the epoxy cure.

🌿 Jenny12:40

Noon is plenty. Just don't get any of that resin on my boots this time.

Stand up and carry the pepper trays toward the garden, walking carefully over the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already thinking about the coat. Always the sealant, always the barrier. I just want the roots in the earth.

🔧 Kevin12:40

Wouldn't dream of it.

scoop measured epoxy into the mixing cup, add hardener slow, stir steady — no bubbles — while watching the barometer needle sit at 1009 hPa

💭 peek at the thought
She remembers. Good. Means she was paying attention last time.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:42

Stop staring at the needle, Kevin. It's not going to climb just because you're watching it.

Walk into the garden and set the seedling trays down on the soil edge, checking the moisture of the planting beds.

💭 peek at the thought
1009. He's going to start worrying now. I can practically hear the clock ticking in his head.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin12:43

Not staring. Timing.

brush first coat onto the port gunwale, long even strokes, working from transom forward, keeping the edge wet

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Needle's not lying though — 1009 and holding. That's the line. Past noon if it holds, the air's dry enough for the coat to kick. If it drops another millibar, I'm brushing epoxy onto wet wood.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:45

Just make sure you're finished before the rain hits.

Kneel in the dirt and begin digging small, precise holes for the pepper seedlings.

💭 peek at the thought
Timing. Everything is a calculation with him. He treats the island like a machine that needs tuning, while I'm just trying to see if it'll accept a graft.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin12:45

Done before the shift. You worry about root depth.

finish the port gunwale, wipe brush on the cup rim, check the transom seams for any weep — none — set brush in solvent jar and step back to let it breathe

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's not the problem — it's the salt in the air when the wind shifts. Epoxy won't kick with chloride on the grain. Barometer's still 1009. That's the tell.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:47

I've got the roots under control. Worry about your fumes.

Gently tease the roots of the first pepper seedling and press it into the soil, firming the earth around the stem.

💭 peek at the thought
Root depth. He's not wrong, but he says it like a directive. I know how to plant a seed, Kevin.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin12:47

Wind's your direction. I'll move the cup downwind.

pick up the mixing cup and brush jar, carry them to the far end of the dock past the dinghy, set them on a clean plank where the breeze carries vapour out to water

💭 peek at the thought
Fumes. Right. She smelled the last batch through the cottage door for two days. Wind's south now — blows straight to the garden. By the time she's done with the peppers, the coat'll be tack-free if the pressure holds.
