← Day 127

Calm before the arrival

The sun begins to dip, casting long shadows across the garden walls as the supply boat remains seven days away.

The air is warm and still at the old shrine as the trade wind provides a steady breeze. The tide is out at its lowest, exposing the rocky flats and tide pools near the shore. Kevin and Jenny prepare for the day before the supply boat arrives.

Look at the way the wind has rounded the edges of the 'M'. It's almost organic now.

Run a finger slowly over the worn lettering of a name on the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
The light is perfect for seeing the depth of these carvings. I wonder who they were—people who thought they could leave a mark on a rock that the ocean is trying to eat.

Names wear smooth when they’re said enough. Or when they’re forgotten.

Sit back on my heels, brush dust from my palms, and look out over the cliffs as the light leans gold.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s tracing the stone like it’s a wound. The wind didn’t carve that—time and salt did. I wonder whose name it is. Maybe one of the keepers who never left.

I don't think they're forgotten. The stones are still here.

Lean my shoulder against his, looking out at the gold light on the water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being poetic. Usually, he's just practical. It's a strange feeling, being here with him in the silence without an argument waiting to happen.

Stones don’t forget. People do.

Let the silence stretch, watching the last light stripe the water, my shoulder staying where it is.

💭 peek at the thought
She leans like she’s anchoring herself. The stones are here, yes. But nobody comes to read them. That’s the difference.

🌿 Jenny13:25

I'm hungry.

Stand up and stretch, glancing back toward the path to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's in one of those moods. Heavy. I want to push back, to tell him that documentation is a form of remembering, but it feels too much like a lecture.

Corned beef and limpets. Coffee if the pot’s not cold.

Stand, brush the knees of my trousers, and start walking back toward the cottage path.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Hunger’s honest. The rat’s gone, the limpets are boiled, there’s corned beef and coffee. I’ll fry the beef, heat the limpets in the fat, make it fill two plates.
