Nightfall Quiet
The tide has reached its low point and the shadows are stretching across the island. You meet in the kitchen, the smell of the wood stove lingering in the air.
The morning air is still and dry as the sun rises on Day 129. The low tide has retreated far, leaving the rock pools exposed and slick with limpets and algae. Inside the cottage, the smell of drying sea beet and wood-smoke mint lingers in the heat.
I'm famished. Do we have anything left besides the tinned stuff?
Lean against the kitchen counter and rub my temples.

Limpets and sea beet. Rat if you want it. Corned beef fat to fry them in.
pull the cast iron skillet from the stove hook, set it on the cold burner, and reach for the jar of rendered fat

I'll take the beet and the limpets. Leave the rat for now.
Reach for the chopped sea beet and push it toward the skillet.

Beet first, then limpets. Don't overcook them — they turn to rubber.
add the sea beet to the skillet, stir it once with the spatula, then push it to the side and lay in the limpets, spreading them out in a single layer
