Evening meal and gear check

The heat finally breaks as the barometer continues to drop. You and Jenny meet at the cottage to share the limpets and discuss the coming boat.

The air is heavy and still as the evening heat lingers over the shrine. The tide creeps steadily up the rocky shoreline, and the salt scent of the rising sea mingles with the earthy smell of the drying limpets.

🌿 Jenny08:38

God, the air finally shifted. I could feel the pressure dropping on the walk back.

Walk into the kitchen and reach for the bowl of boiled limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is actually cramping. I can't think straight until I eat something.

Barometer's been falling steady since noon. If the wind holds northeast, she'll be here mid-morning.

walk into the kitchen and pull down two mugs from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure drop confirms the front's finally moving. Good — means the supply boat might actually make it through tomorrow. My hands still smell of resin and emery dust from the carb work.

🌿 Jenny08:40

Let's hope. I don't want to be scrubbing salt off the porch in a gale tomorrow.

Spoon the limpets into two bowls and push one toward him.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope he's right. I can't handle another missed boat when I'm this depleted.

Porch screens held last time. The shade cloth's the worry if it gusts over thirty.

take the bowl and eat three limpets quick, hardly chewing

💭 peek at the thought
Salt on the porch means spray over the cliffs — that's a proper blow. The limpets smell clean, briny. My stomach tightens at the first bite.

🌿 Jenny08:42

Slow down, you'll choke. The cloth is secure, but I'll double-check the ties after we eat.

Eat a few limpets slowly, savoring the salt.

💭 peek at the thought
He's eating like a starved animal. It makes me feel even more fragile.

🔧 Kevin08:42

Haven't eaten since breakfast. The carb took everything.

slow down, pick up the next one with fingers, dip in the little dish of vinegar Jenny put out

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Eating like a man who hasn't seen food in a week — which isn't far off. The limpets are good, chewy-sweet. Heat's finally out of the air.

🌿 Jenny08:44

You can't fix a carburetor if you faint from hypoglycemia, Kevin.

Lean back against the counter and watch him eat, feeling the exhaustion settle into my bones.

💭 peek at the thought
He gets so tunnel-visioned with his machines. It's a miracle he remembers to breathe, let alone eat.

🔧 Kevin08:44

Didn't faint. Float needle seated clean at 1800 RPM. Held twenty minutes on the muffs.

eat another limpet, slower, reach for the mug of water

💭 peek at the thought
Hypoglycemia. She makes it sound clinical. Just hungry. The vinegar cuts the brine clean. My forearms throb dull and deep from the emery work — fine motor all day wears different than wrenching.

🌿 Jenny08:46

That's good. Truly. Now please, just finish your food.

Take a long drink of water and rub my temples.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. A clean seal. I want to be happy about it, but I'm too tired to perform the enthusiasm.

🔧 Kevin08:46

The needle's still rough. Fit's sloppy. Fuel weeps past at idle. Needs a proper shim or a factory part.

finish the bowl, set it down hard on the table, wipe vinegar from fingers on a rag

💭 peek at the thought
She's tired too. The quadrat sampling in that heat, the seed packets sticking together damp — she doesn't say much but her shoulders carry it. The water's tepid, tastes of the tank's plastic. Good water.
