The Rising Heat

Kevin and Jenny meet on the porch as the temperature begins to climb further.

Kevin watered the heirloom seedlings and moved them to the porch shade. Jenny began sketching the layout for the seed potato planting.

The heat is spiking. We need to check the heirloom seedlings before they wilt completely.

wipe sweat from my forehead with the back of a hand and gesture toward the garden beds.

💭 peek at the thought
It's too hot to even breathe, and he's looking at me like I'm a broken appliance.

On it. Kitchen counter first, then the beds.

walk into the kitchen, lift the seed trays off the counter, carry them to the porch shade, set them down gently

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the trays on the counter are baking. If the soil dries out now, the tomatoes are done. Need to move them to shade and water.

🌿 Jenny15:36

Thank you. Careful with the basil, it's the most temperamental.

follow him to the porch and check the moisture level of the soil in the trays with a fingertip.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually listening for once. Still, the soil looks too pale.

🔧 Kevin15:36

Water can next. Rain tank's full.

grab the watering can from the porch corner, fill it from the rain tank tap, return to the trays and water each cell slow and even

💭 peek at the thought
Basil bolts in heat. Soil's bone dry on top. She knows her stuff — been watching them closer than I have.

🌿 Jenny15:39

Just a drizzle. If we drown them, the fungus will move in.

watch his hand carefully, then walk over to the crate of seed potatoes and nudge it with my boot to see how they're settling.

💭 peek at the thought
He's doing it right, but we're still just playing house. The real garden is out there, choking on weeds.

🔧 Kevin15:39

Drizzle it is. Spuds need the shed, not sun.

water each cell with a slow, thin stream, just until the surface darkens, then set the can down and walk to the seed potato crate, lift one end to test weight

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Light hand. These trays don't need a flood — just enough to kiss the roots. Potatoes in the crate are a different beast; they want dark and cool, not wet.

🌿 Jenny15:40

Let's keep them here for ten more minutes. I need to sketch the grid first.

reach for my notebook and charcoal pencil, then clear a space on the porch table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the shade, but he's too blunt. I need to get the layout sorted before we just throw them in the dirt.

🔧 Kevin15:41

Ten minutes. I'll be at the dinghy fuel line.

walk off the porch toward the dock where the dinghy sits, pull the cracked primer bulb from my pocket, compare it to the spare from the grey locker

💭 peek at the thought
Grid sketch. She's mapping the potato varieties row by row so we don't lose track when they go in the ground. Smart. The heat's not letting up — ten minutes won't hurt them in the shade.
