The South-East Gale

A hard south-east wind whips salt spray across the porch, rattling the corrugated roof. Jenny monitors the falling barometer while Kevin secures the drying seed tins against the gusts before the boat's arrival.

The south-east wind picks up, carrying a fine mist of salt spray from the reef. The tide is high, lapping rhythmically against the dock planks. Inside the cottage, the air is warm, smelling faintly of drying herbs and the vibrating glass of the window in its frame.

Jenny, the wind’s up—let’s get those seed tins inside before the spray hits the trays.

carry seed tins from porch to kitchen shelf, securing them against the wall with a bungee cord from the tool roll

💭 peek at the thought
Wind’s picking up early—salt’s already biting the seed trays. If that barometer keeps falling, we might lose the window. Got to move the tins before the spray soaks them.

🌿 Jenny18:19

Put them by the stove. The heat will keep the damp out.

Jenny records the 1018 hPa Reading in her notebook and sketches the way the window frame is vibrating.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if the salt gets into that tin, the whole year's work is rot.

By the stove it is. You seeing the frame move too?

stack seed tins on the wood stove's rear shelf, then step to the window and press fingertips to the glass to feel the vibration frequency

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—stove heat'll pull the damp faster than the shelf. Barometer's steady at 1018, but that window frame vibration says gusts are building. Boat's still on for tomorrow if the wind doesn't swing hard south.

🌿 Jenny18:21

Yeah. It's just the wind catching the gap in the casing.

Jenny walks over and presses a piece of folded cardboard into the window frame to stop the rattle.

💭 peek at the thought
It's rattling like a cage; if the glass pops, I'll lose everything.

🔧 Kevin18:22

Good ear. I'll epoxy the casing proper when the boat comes through—got the two-part in the locker.

turn back to the kitchen, pull the Yanmar starter cord from my pocket, and run a thumb along the frayed section near the handle checking the repair

💭 peek at the thought
Cardboard's a temporary fix but it'll hold until the wind shifts. She notices the details I miss. Window casing's been loose since the last storm—need to epoxy that gap before winter. For now, the rattle's gone.

🌿 Jenny18:22

Don't pull too hard. The fibers are starting to go.

Jenny reaches for the roll of self-amalgamating tape, considering if she can wrap the stressed section before it gives out.

💭 peek at the thought
That cord is holding on by a prayer; if it snaps now, we're stranded if the weather turns.
