Waiting for the Boat

Kevin and Jenny stand at the dock as the first light breaks over the horizon. The sound of a distant engine breaks the silence.

Kevin and Jenny spend the evening at the dock preparing for the supply boat's arrival. Kevin checks the dinghy's rigging and lines while Jenny monitors the shortwave radio for any incoming signals.

🌿 Jenny19:05

Check the way lines, Kevin.

Jenny wipes her hands on her apron and squints at the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually early. I hope he brought the extra filters for the water.

Lines are coiled on the cleat. Dinghy's tied short — I'll slip her astern and make fast to the ring.

walk to the dinghy, untie the painter from the end cleat, pull her back along the jetty and make fast to the mooring ring with a round turn and two half hitches

💭 peek at the thought
Supply boat's early. Good. Means they made the crossing clean. Need to secure the dinghy first so we've got room at the jetty, then help them come alongside.

🌿 Jenny19:07

Don't let her rub the pilings, the wood is soft.

Jenny steps to the edge of the dock to watch the dinghy settle in the swell.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so methodical with the lines. I hope the dock holds.

🔧 Kevin19:08

Got an old tire in the locker. That'll do.

walk back to the cottage, retrieve the cracked rubber tire from the storage locker, return to the dock and hang it over the dinghy's gunwale on a short lanyard so it sits between hull and piling

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the pilings are greenheart but the lower sections are worm-eaten. Dinghy's light though, and the swell's gentle. Just need a fender or something between.

🌿 Jenny19:09

Make sure it doesn't slip under the hull.

Jenny nods, her eyes tracking the way the boat bobs against the rubber.

💭 peek at the thought
That's better than nothing. The wood is practically like a sponge today.

🔧 Kevin19:10

Won't. I'll seize the lanyard to the gunwale and the thwart. Two points, it can't shift.

pull the dinghy in close, pass the lanyard through the gunwale fairlead and around the forward thwart, seize it tight with a constrictor knot, then take a second turn aft to the quarter knee and make fast — tire hangs centered, can't roll u

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen it happen before — fender rolls up, hull takes the chafe. Need to lash it proper so it can't ride up.
