Evening Heatbreak

The shadows finally lengthen as the temperature begins to dip. You and Jenny meet in the kitchen to assess the state of the water tank.

The heat remains oppressive as the sun sets, keeping the potato planting stalled for now. Jenny moves the wilting heirloom seedlings into the shade to prevent further dehydration, while Kevin inspects the radio wiring for signs of heat damage.

Tank?

walk to the rain tank at the back wall and run a hand along the lower seam where the epoxy patch sits, checking for any weep or sweat

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's held. Good. Means the patch on the lower seam held through the heat. One less thing.

🌿 Jenny20:47

389 litres. No leaks, for now.

I wipe sweat from my forehead with the back of a hand and check the water gauge one last time.

💭 peek at the thought
It's still at 389, but the heat is sucking everything out of the air.

Nine days. We make it.

pull a mug from the shelf, fill it from the tank tap, drink half and set the rest aside for later

💭 peek at the thought
Eleven litres down from 400 in this heat. That's... not bad. Not good either. Nine days till the boat. We stretch.

🌿 Jenny20:48

If the boat actually shows up.

I look at the wilting heirloom seedlings on the kitchen floor and sigh, moving them another inch into the shade of the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
Nine days is a lifetime when your stomach is growling at itself.

🔧 Kevin20:50

It'll come. Or we'll see it on the horizon and make it out.

set the mug down, wipe my hands on my trousers, and walk to the porch to check the shortwave radio's power connection and battery voltage with the multimeter from my pocket

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking about the seedlings. I'm thinking about the dinghy. We're both waiting for something that might not come.

🌿 Jenny20:50

Just make sure the wiring actually holds this time.

I lean against the doorframe, watching him work with the wires while wondering if the battery is strong enough to catch a signal.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always optimistic when the radio is dead and the stomach is empty.

🔧 Kevin20:52

Battery's at twelve-six. Coax is the weak link.

clip the multimeter leads to the battery terminals, read the voltage, then trace the coax from the radio to the mast bracket where the new porcelain insulator sits, tugging gently at the connection to test the seat

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The insulator held but the coax is old. Shield continuity failed last month. If the battery's down, it doesn't matter what the wire does.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:53

If the coax is shot, we're just talking to the wind.

I sit down on the kitchen floor, tracing the scorched edges of a tomato leaf with a trembling finger.

💭 peek at the thought
Twelve-six is decent, but a battery won't fix a broken aerial.
