The Storm Breaks

The wind howls through the eaves as the heavy rain turns in earnest, drench the island in darkness seven days before the supply boat arrives.

Kevin inspected the garden wall's seaward base and found the mortar weeping but stones seated with backfill draining. He then checked the spring intake and found it clogged with silt, clearing it before the cistern could back up. Jenny monitored from the porch and confirmed the wall was holding.

Kevin — pull on oilskins and boots, grab the headlamp, step out onto the porch to check the dinghy lines and garden wall

💭 peek at the thought
The storm's here proper now. Wind's shifted west and the barometer's still dropping. Seven days till the boat — if it comes at all. Need to check the dinghy's secured and the garden wall's holding before the tide peaks.

Get inside, Kevin! The dinghy is already double-secured!

Watch from the doorway as his headlamp flickers against the rain, checking for gaps in the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if the tide rises, the second row of potatoes will rot before they sprout.

🔧 Kevin23:02

Wall's holding so far. Just checking the base course where the tide hits.

crouch at the garden wall's seaward end, running headlamp beam along the mortar joints where water meets stone

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the dinghy — I did the stern line splice myself with the new rope. But the garden wall's only two courses higher than last season and the mortar's fresh. If the surge tops it, the potato trenches wash out.

🌿 Jenny23:02

Don't stay out there too long, the pressure is falling faster than the forecast predicted!

Step out onto the porch, shielding your eyes from the spray, and watch the waves surge toward the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
If the sea breaches that wall, the entire second row is lost—I spent days on those trenches.

🔧 Kevin23:04

Mortar's weeping at the base but the stones are seated. Backfill's draining. I'll check the spring overflow next — if the cistern backs up, we lose the tank.

stand, wipe rain from face, head toward the cottage's back corner where the spring feed enters the tank

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Barometer was 1035 this morning and falling steady. If it's accelerated, we could see 990s by midnight. That's not a normal front — that's something spinning up hard. The mortar's weeping but holding. Back course looks sound.

🌿 Jenny23:04

Watch the intake, it was getting clogged with silt after the last gale!

Follow him to the back of the way, holding the way to illuminate the 400-litre tank.

💭 peek at the thought
If the overflow is blocked, the whole area will flood and we'll have no clean water for weeks.
