← Day 139

the old shrine · day 139 · night

The storm intensifies

The two of them huddle together inside the shrine as the wind howls through the trees, tide beginning to rise.

The air is heavy with the smell of ozone and damp salt as the clouds close in overhead. Jenny returns to the shrine with the seed trays tucked under her arms just as the first gust of wind lashes against the canvas. The tide is rising quickly, licking at the rocks of the shore.

Pressure's still dropping. Garden's going to take a beating.

pull the canvas tighter around us both and check the barometer by headlamp light

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's wrong for this time of year — too cold, too steady. She's pressed against my side and I'm counting the seconds between gusts like I used to count cylinder firings. The garden tarp won't hold if this backs further west.

🌿 Jenny00:35

The garden will hold if we weight the way down with stones now.

Sketch the way the wind bends the grass in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in five days, we'll be out of protein by next week.

🔧 Kevin00:36

Tarp's already weighted. What's not weighted is the seed trays on the porch. If the wind gets under the eaves —

reach for the notebook to see her sketch, thumb brushing the page edge

💭 peek at the thought
She's already planning the repair while the storm's still building. That's her — always three steps ahead on the things that grow. I should've had those stones placed yesterday.

🌿 Jenny00:37

I'll move them inside the way before the rain gets any worse.

Stand up and grab the seed trays from the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the structure while I'm worried about the life inside it.

🔧 Kevin00:38

Wait — the steps are slick. Take the lantern.

hand her the LED headlamp from my neck, already switched on

💭 peek at the thought
She moves before I can say stay. The porch roof's barely holding as it is — seen the rafters flex in lesser blows. But she's already gone.

🌿 Jenny00:38

I've got it. way keep the fire going.

Put on the headlamp and step out into the rain to retrieve the trays.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't lose these seedlings; not after four months of fighting the damp.

🔧 Kevin00:40

Be quick.

feed the last of the dry split wood into the stove, damper half-closed to stretch it

💭 peek at the thought
Fire's just coals and damp kindling. She knows that. She's giving me something to do so I don't follow her into the wind. The shrine stones are cold against my back and the radio's dead silent in the cottage — no supply boat call, no Tom, no weather forecast worth a damn.

🌿 Jenny00:41

I'm moving. Just a second.

Step onto the slick porch, grab the seed trays, and retreat back into the warmth of the shrine.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up too fast; I need to get the salt off those sprouts.
