A Quiet Meal

They eat the corned beef in silence, the sound of the wind against the cottage their only company.

Kevin and Jenny finished their sparse dinner of corned beef, potatoes, limpets, and sea beet in the stifling cottage. The heat and exhaustion settled over them as they cleaned up, the barometer holding steady at 1036 hPa. They retired early, too drained for anything but sleep.

It's too salty. But I suppose that's the point of corned beef.

Push a piece of potato around the plate with a fork.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence is too thick. I can't tell if he's thinking about the engine or if he's just as exhausted as I am.

Keeps without a fridge. That's the point.

Cut another piece of potato, chew slowly, watch the steam curl off the pot.

She's not wrong. Salt's a preservative, not a flavour. But it's protein and calories and we've got six cans of it.

🌿 Jenny09:44

I know. I just miss things that don't taste like a salt mine.

Take a slow sip of water from a glass.

He's in that practical, mechanical headspace. Everything is just a function of survival or utility.

We've got sea beet. Limpets. Mint drying on the porch.

Push the last of the potato around the plate, mop it through the fat in the pan.

💭 peek at the thought
She's talking about more than food. She's talking about the garden that isn't growing, the seeds turning mouldy, the life we said we'd build.
