The Humidity Trap

Jenny stands over the seedling trays, fanning the damp soil as the air remains heavy and still. Kevin sits on the step, watching the barometer needle dip further as the sky darkens over the ridge.

Kevin spent the morning mounting the Yanmar engine onto the dinghy, struggling with the heavy humidity. Jenny worked in the garden, transplanting the potato seedlings into the soil before the rain arrived. The pressure continues to drop as the sky thickens overhead.

🌿 Jenny07:32

It's dropping fast. I need to move the trays to the high shelf before the wind picks up.

Carefully lift the seedling trays from the table and place them on the high shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
That needle is diving. If the pressure drops any further, the draft from the stove will be too much for these little things.

Mornin'. Wind'll come from the southwest if it follows the barometer. Dinghy's still on the dock.

walk to the porch and check the dinghy's stern line and mast lashings

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still falling and the air's gone dead still. That's worse than wind — means the front's sitting right on us. She's right to move the trays, but the real problem's the dinghy if this blows up from the southwest.

🌿 Jenny07:34

Then you'd better make sure those lashings are tight. I'm heading out to the grid.

Walk to the porch and grab the seed potato crate and the spade.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always thinking about the boat. The boat doesn't eat, and it doesn't grow.

🔧 Kevin07:34

Aye. I'll see the dinghy holds, then run the generator test under load before it hits.

walk to the dock and inspect the dinghy's stern line and mast step lashings for chafing or slack

💭 peek at the thought
She's taking the seed potatoes to the high ground grid — smart. If the wind comes up and drives spray, the low beds'll get scoured. I'll secure the dinghy proper, then check the generator fuel line in case we lose mains and need to run it through the blow.

🌿 Jenny07:36

Just don't let the generator spray oil near my seedlings.

Walk to the garden and set the seed potato crate down by the grid.

💭 peek at the thought
He's in his element with the machines. I just hope he doesn't forget that the garden needs a hand if the rain turns into a deluge.

🔧 Kevin07:37

Won't. Oil's fresh, diaphragm's new. I'll run it on the porch side, exhaust downwind.

reach the dock and check the stern line splice, the mast step lashings, and the bilge pump discharge for blockage

💭 peek at the thought
Generator's clean — new diaphragm, fresh oil, ran smooth yesterday. She knows that. She's nervous about the storm and taking it out on the machine. I'll check the dinghy, then fire the Yanmar up hard for twenty minutes to prove the mounts and the sleeve hold. If it passes, we've got a way off this rock when the window opens.

🌿 Jenny07:38

Good. I'm starting the transplanting.

Kneel by the grid and begin digging the first planting holes with the spade.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure of his mechanics. I just need to get these potatoes in the ground before the soil turns to slurry.

🔧 Kevin07:38

Dinghy's secure. Mast's lashed, stern line's sound, bilge clear. Firing the Yanmar now — twenty minutes under load.

walk back to the cottage, uncover the Yanmar on the porch, check oil and fuel, then start it and clamp the load test bracket to the prop shaft

💭 peek at the thought
Stern line splice is holding — new rope, long splice served with twine. Mast step lashings are tight, the doubler plate bolts haven't backed off. Bilge pump discharge clear. Good. Now the engine. If the mounts I epoxied yesterday have cured enough to take vibration, the Yanmar'll prove it under load.
