A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The warm rain continues to fall against the cottage as Kevin and Jenny retreat indoors for the evening. Kevin checks the state of the epoxy on the transom repair, while Jenny monitors the germinating seed trays in the high humidity.

🌿 Jenny09:00

I'm boiling the limpets.

Walk to the wood stove, fill the heavy pot with water, and set it to boil.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is drumming on the roof again and my stomach is growling louder than the thunder. I need to eat those limpets before I lose focus.

🔧 Kevin09:00

Put the corned beef fat in. Makes the broth worth drinking.

Walk to the porch, pull the shortwave radio down from the shelf, and inspect the spare porcelain insulator I fitted yesterday — check the self-amalgamating tape seal where the coax meets the bracket.

💭 peek at the thought
Smell of salt and steam rising. She's moving without asking — good. The barometer's rising, finally. Might hold.

🌿 Jenny09:02

I'll add a bit from the tin.

Open the tin of corned beef, way out a way of the fat, and drop it into the boiling water with the limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the fat; the salt from the limpets is too sharp without some actual calories today.

🔧 Kevin09:02

Save me a limpet. I'll check the mast while the water heats.

Step outside, grab the crowbar from the porch, and walk toward the radio mast. Test the insulator by tapping it lightly — listen for any crackle in the headphones if I key the mic.

💭 peek at the thought
The fat will render slow. Broth'll be rich. Radio's still dead — insulator looks sealed but no signal yet. Need to test.

🌿 Jenny09:04

I'll save you a whole bowl.

Stir the pot, then move the seedling trays a few inches further from the stove's heat to avoid scorching them.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope he doesn't accidentally knock the whole thing over in this wind. I'm too tired to climb a ladder today.

🔧 Kevin09:04

Back in ten.

Climb the mast slow, one hand on the wet aluminum, the other testing the coax connection at the insulator. Key the mic once at the top — "Sorrel Island, test, test" — and listen through the headphones for any return.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead. Seedlings safe. Radio's the only thread to the world. Mast's wet — ceramic holds if the tape held. Wind's dropping.

🌿 Jenny09:06

Jenny — pour the boiling limpets and broth into two bowls, then set one on the table for him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so certain about the hardware. I wonder if he's actually listening for a voice or just the sound of something working.

🔧 Kevin09:06

Feedline's shot. Need the new coax from the crate. Eat first.

Descend the mast, boots slick on the rungs. Walk back to the cottage, wipe salt from hands on trousers, and sit at the table. Take the spoon. Drink the broth first — hot, salty, rich with corned beef fat.

💭 peek at the thought
Static. Nothing but atmospheric hiss. The spare insulator's sealed but the coax is still the old salt-rotted run. Transmission's dead until I replace the whole feedline. Bowl waits on the table — steam rising, fat gleaming. She didn't ask if it worked. She knew.
