Midday Meal

Kevin and Jenny meet at the porch as the heat begins to mellow slightly. The smell of opened corned beef fills the humid air.

Kevin used the crowbar to pry open the waterlogged crate at the dock during low tide, discovering six cans of corned beef. Jenny spent the day surveying the southern transect and monitoring the drying heirloom seeds, which remain stubbornly damp in the high humidity.

Corned beef's on the porch. Rope's shot — salt ate the fibres. Might serve for lashings if we're desperate.

set the crowbar against the porch rail and wipe forearms on thighs

💭 peek at the thought
Six tins of corned beef and a coil of useless rope. Not a bad haul for a morning's fight with swollen wood. Jenny's got that look — the one where she's deciding whether to say something or let the silence stretch. Heat's dropping a fraction. Good.

Don't use it for anything critical. It's brittle. I'm starving—is that all we're having?

Walk to the table and look at the corned beef, then glance toward the drying seeds on the screens.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is actually cramping. He sounds so certain about that rope, but I saw the fibers snap. It's useless for anything that actually needs to hold.

There's limpets from this morning. Sea beet too. Boiled the limpets already. Beet's chopped, waiting on the stove.

pull out a chair at the table and pry open the first tin with the church key

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the rope. She's also right about the food — six tins between two people, one meal a day if we stretch it. Supply boat's nine days out if it shows. Garden's still mostly weeds. I should've had potatoes in months ago.

🌿 Jenny10:16

Thanks for doing the limpets. I'll get the beet off the stove.

Go into the kitchen and move the chopped sea beet from the stove to a plate.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he remembered the limpets. It's a strange menu, but it's calories. I wonder if the sea beet is too salty to eat without more water.

🔧 Kevin10:18

Crate gave up six tins. Seals held. That's something.

fork a slab of corned beef onto my plate and pour the gelled fat over it

💭 peek at the thought
She doesn't ask how the crate went. Doesn't ask about the radio silence. Just moves the beet and says thanks. The kind of quiet that either means she's done pushing or she's saving it for later.

🌿 Jenny10:18

Six tins is a win. It'll take the pressure off the next boat delivery.

Sit down and push the sea beet to the side of the plate to make room for the beef.

💭 peek at the thought
The fat is shimmering and heavy. It's a victory, I suppose, but the way he's focusing on the tins feels like he's trying to avoid talking about the mast.

🔧 Kevin10:20

Boat's due in nine. Barometer's falling. 1038 and dropping.

eat a mouthful of corned beef, chew slow, chase it with a forkful of sea beet

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure off the next boat. Nine days if it comes. Fourteen if it doesn't. She's doing the math same as me. Difference is she says it out loud.

🌿 Jenny10:20

Let's hope the weather holds long enough for them to get.

Take a bite of the corned beef and chew, the salt hitting my tongue.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is always dropping. If the boat doesn't come, we're going to be much more careful with these tins.
