The Storm Breaks

The rain begins to lash the roof as the wind picks up from the east. You sit together inside, listening to the rafters rattle.

Kevin secures the cottage perimeter against the coming storm as the pressure continues to drop. Jenny focuses on moving the delicate heirloom seed trays to the warmest spot to protect them from the rising humidity and wind.

The east wind is hitting. I need to move the trays further from the window.

Lift the seedling trays and slide them toward the center of the kitchen table, away from the drafts.

💭 peek at the thought
That wind is coming right for the seedling trays. I can't let the salt spray get in through the gaps.

Wind'll shift north by midnight. Window on that side'll leak.

Pull the cast iron skillet from the hook, set it on the stove to heat for the corned beef tin I left on the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
The east wind hits hard — rain driving sideways against the porch. She's moving the trays without asking, like she knows this kitchen better than I do. Good. Means she's staying put in her head even if her mouth hasn't said it yet.

If it leaks, the seedlings will be soaked. I'll put the canvas over them.

Reach for a piece of canvas and drape it loosely over the trays to shield them from any drips.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually paying attention to the weather for once. I wonder if he's thinking about the boat or just the roof.

Canvas holds. Skillet's hot.

Pry the corned beef tin open with the church key, tip the fat into the skillet, let it shimmer.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead. Canvas over the trays, skillet heating, radio silent for three days. The storm's not the thing that keeps me up.

🌿 Jenny10:06

Smells better than the limpets.

Lean against the counter and watch the fat sizzle, rubbing my tired arms.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of that fat is the only thing making this room feel like a home right now. I'm starving.

Limpets keep you alive. This keeps you human.

Fork the meat into the fat, break it up slow, let the edges crisp.

💭 peek at the thought
She's close. Shoulder near mine. The wind hammers the porch roof and she hasn't moved toward the bedroom. The tin sings in the pan.
