Afternoon Rain Shelter

The rain has turned into a steady downpour, lashing the garden walls. You both gather at the table to eat the limpets while the barometer continues its slow drop.

The heavy rain sets in from the west, forcing work indoors or under the tarps. Kevin spends the afternoon securing the heirloom seed trays from the downpour while Jenny monitors the falling pressure and prepares the interior.

🌿 Jenny10:32

The pressure is dropping. We should check the roof leaks.

eat a piece of limpet and look out at the grey horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
He's staring at the radio again like he can force it to work just by looking at it hard enough.

🔧 Kevin10:33

Aye. After breakfast. You check the bedroom ceiling, I'll take the porch and radio mast.

eat limpets slowly, watching the rain through the window

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The barometer's been sliding all morning and this rain isn't letting up. The porch roof over the radio gear took a beating last winter — if the flashing's gone, we'll lose the shortwave entirely. Chest's tight again. Always is when the pressure drops this low.

🌿 Jenny10:34

Fine. Just don't get the radio wet while you're out there.

push the plate of limpets toward him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always thinking about the equipment. The radio, the engine, the mast. Everything that connects us to the world we left.

🔧 Kevin10:34

Wouldn't dream of it. Eat.

take a limpet, chew slowly, wipe fingers on a rag

💭 peek at the thought
She knows I won't. Spent three hours yesterday wrapping that coax in tape and tarred cloth. The insulator's the weak point — cracked ceramic arc-tracking in wet wind. If the spare porcelain holds, we transmit. If not, we're blind until the boat comes.

🌿 Jenny10:36

I'm not that hungry.

push the remaining limpets away and stand up.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's being comforting. It's just a command.

🔧 Kevin10:36

You'll eat at supper. Put the rest in the tin.

scrape the remaining limpets into the small lidded tin, set it on the shelf above the stove

💭 peek at the thought
She's been picking at food for days. The damp, the pressure, the waiting — it gets under the skin. Mine too. But she needs to eat, and I'm not watching her waste away while I choke down rubbery limpets.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:38

I'll check the bedroom.

walk into the bedroom and look up at the ceiling.

💭 peek at the thought
He's tidying up the space around me, managing the crumbs, the tins, the silence.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:38

Shout if you find wet insulation.

pull on oilskin jacket, grab the short stepladder from the corner, head out onto the porch

💭 peek at the thought
Bedroom ceiling held last storm. But the chimney flashing on the porch side — that's where the wind drives rain horizontal. Radio mast bracket bolts through the rafter there. If water tracks down the coax, the set's done.

🌿 Jenny10:40

Jenny — stand still in the center of the bedroom, scanning the whitewashed stone and the ceiling for any darkening patches of damp.

💭 peek at the thought
I can hear him moving out there, fighting the wind. The house feels too small when we're both in it, and too empty when we're not.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:40

Kevin — climb the stepladder onto the porch roof, crouch low against the wind, run hands along the lead flashing around the mast bracket feeling for lifts or cracks

💭 peek at the thought
Porch roof's taking it hard. Rain slanting near horizontal off the southwest — straight into the mast bracket. Ladder's slick. Grip the rails, not the rungs. Check the flashing first, then the coax entry, then the insulator. Order matters.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:42

Jenny — step closer to the corner where the wall meets the ceiling, tracing the line of the plaster with my eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence is louder than the rain. Just me and the sound of the house breathing.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:42

(shouting down through the hatch) Bedroom ceiling dry?

peel the failed tape from the coax gland with cold fingers, pull the fresh roll from the pocket, start wrapping clean — stretch, overlap, stretch, overlap — sealing the braid against the gland nut

💭 peek at the thought
Flashing's sound — lead's still bedded tight in the mortar, no green corrosion streaks. Coax entry gland is weeping though. Self-amalgamating tape's gone brittle at the top wrap, half-peeled. Water's tracking down the braid. Not much, but enough to rot the dielectric given time. Need to re-tape it before the real blow hits. Insulator next — spare porcelain's seated clean, tape holding. Good.
