The Storm Breaks

The wind picks up, rattling the rafters, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the dust outside. You huddle together by the stove.

The air is heavy as the cloud cover thickens, signaling a shift in weather. Kevin and Jenny spend the evening securing the garden and checking the radio's structural integrity before the pressure drops further.

🌿 Jenny10:56

It's here.

Lean my shoulder against his and watch the rain blur the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure has finally bottomed out. I can feel it in my joints.

🔧 Kevin10:56

Aye. Front's parked on top of us.

set mug down on the counter and wrap an arm around her shoulders, watching the porch through the window

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer was right. 977 and steady — steady's worse than falling. Means the front's sitting on us. She's leaning into me and I'm not pulling away. That's something.

🌿 Jenny10:58

I hope the seedlings don't drown.

Rest my head on his shoulder and sigh.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually touching me. I don't want to pull away, but I don't know how to lean in.

🔧 Kevin10:58

They're under the tarp. Wool box by the stove. You moved them yourself.

rub thumb against her upper arm through the fabric, slow and steady

💭 peek at the thought
She's worried about the seedlings. Not the roof, not the radio, not whether we'll have to eat the last of the corned beef cold. The seedlings. That's who she is.

🌿 Jenny11:00

I know. I just... I can't lose them.

Close my eyes and lean into the warmth of his arm.

💭 peek at the thought
I know I did. I just need to know they're actually safe.

🔧 Kevin11:00

You won't lose them. I'll check the west wall drain after this gust passes — make sure it's not backing up.

shift slightly to free my hand, then reach for the oilskin coat on the hook by the door

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the tomatoes. She's talking about the garden we never built, the life we said we'd make. If the seedlings go, it's proof we didn't try hard enough.

🌿 Jenny11:02

Wait. Take the headlamp.

Reach for the LED headlamp on the table and hold it out to him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's leaving the warmth for a drain. Typical. But he's doing it for my plants.

🔧 Kevin11:02

Ta. (take the headlamp and click it on — beam cuts the gloom over the stove)

pull the oilskin on, snug the hood, and step toward the back door, pausing with hand on the latch to look back at her in the stove-light

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead. Always is. Even now, with the wind screaming in the eaves, she's making sure I can see what I'm doing.
