Lunch in the rain

Jenny sets the two plates on the table, waiting for Kevin to join her inside as the rain drums against the roof.

Heavy rain lashes in from the west, forcing activity indoors at the keeper's cottage. Kevin works on the shortwave radio components while Jenny manages the germinating seed trays against the rising humidity.

Smells good.

walk into the kitchen, wipe hands on a rag hanging by the stove, pull out the chair and sit down

💭 peek at the thought
The smell hits me before I'm through the door — corned beef fat and sea beet, something warm and familiar. My hands are still greasy from the Yanmar. I should wash first.

Eat before it gets cold.

Sit down and begin eating.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is cramping. I can't think straight when I'm this hungry.

Kevin — pick up the fork and start eating

💭 peek at the thought
She's not pushing. Not asking about the dock, the engine, the chick on the cliff. Just food on the table and the rain on the roof. I'll take it.

🌿 Jenny13:38

The barometer is steady at 986, but the wind is shifting.

Watch him over the rim of the plate.

💭 peek at the thought
He's eating in that mechanical way again. Just fuel. No taste, no presence.

🔧 Kevin13:40

Which way?

keep eating, glance at the radio shelf where the barometer sits

💭 peek at the thought
She watched it while I was out there. Knows the numbers better than I do some days. The shift matters more than the reading.

🌿 Jenny13:40

West. It's pushing the rain right into our faces.

Push a piece of sea beet around the plate with a fork.

💭 peek at the thought
He asks for a direction like it's a coordinate on a map. It's a feeling in the air, not just a number.

🔧 Kevin13:42

Good thing the seedlings are under cloth.

take another bite, chew slowly

💭 peek at the thought
West wind means the rain's not done. It'll keep drumming on the roof and soaking anything left out. The garden tarp's holding, but the seedlings under the shade cloth — she checked them earlier. Said they were safe.

🌿 Jenny13:42

They're okay for now. But the soil is getting saturated.

Take a slow, careful bite of food.

💭 peek at the thought
He's checking a box. 'Seedlings protected: check.' He doesn't actually see them, not the way I do.

🔧 Kevin13:44

The back beds by the woods. They need a trench.

set the fork down, reach for the tin mug of tea she left on the shelf earlier

💭 peek at the thought
Saturated soil means rot if it doesn't drain. The beds I built have lime in them — pH's right — but water's water. The wall on the seaward side holds, but the back beds near the woods don't have the same drainage.

🌿 Jenny13:44

Not in this. The ground is already a way.

Look out at the rain lashing the windowpane.

💭 peek at the thought
If he digs a trench now, the walls will just collapse in five minutes. The earth is too soft.
