Morning Review

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen. The smell of coffee fills the room as they prepare to plan the day's remaining tasks.

Kevin attempted to secure the dinghy's bow line and test the engine, but the line slipped and the engine sputtered. Jenny successfully reinforced the garden tarp and inspected the heirloom seedlings for mold.

Morning. Coffee's hot.

Pour two mugs from the pot on the stove, set one on the table beside her notebook. Lean back against the counter, cradling my own.

💭 peek at the thought
Coffee smells good. She's already moving — checking seedlings, checking me. Morning went quiet. Radio's fixed, Yanmar held. Now the day opens up.

Thanks. (I take a sip, the heat grounding me.) The barometer is rising, but the air is heavy. I've already thinned the seedlings.

Reach for the notebook and tap the page where I've noted the wind damage survey.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being domestic. It's a peace offering, or just a habit. Either way, the air is too still today; it feels like the island is holding its breath.

Wind shift by afternoon. Northeast to east-southeast, twenty-five gusting thirty. Tide turns at fourteen-hundred. We secure the garden tarp and check the dock lines before then.

Set mug down. Pull the notebook closer, thumb the page she's on — my own handwriting from yesterday's walk. Nod once, slow.

💭 peek at the thought
She's read the survey. Knows what's coming. Rising pressure with heavy air — front's building slow. She thinned the seedlings without waking me.

I'll do the garden first. The heirloom tomatoes are still too weak for a gust like that.

Pick up my pencil and sketch a quick, rough map of the garden layout in the margin of the notebook to track where the tarp needs extra reinforcement.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the shift. If that wind hits the garden, the seedlings will be shredded. I need to check the stakes on the tarp.

Dock lines need doubling on the bow. Stern's held but the ring shifts. I'll splice a new chafe guard from the three-strand while you're at the beds.

Tap the margin sketch — small X at the bow cleat. Push back from the table. Stretch shoulders, roll one out. Head for the porch door.

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping it. Good. Means she's thinking past today. Tomatoes won't take the gust — stems still hair-thin. She knows. I'll hit the dock while she's at it.

🌿 Jenny13:19

Don't over-tighten the bow line. The tide's rising; give it an inch to breathe.

Stand up and walk toward the porch, pausing to check the seedlings one last time.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always moving, always fixing. I wonder if he thinks the world can be held together by enough stainless steel and nylon.

🔧 Kevin13:20

Inch it is.

Step out onto the porch, pull the coil of new half-inch three-strand from beside the door. Walk down the path toward the dock, boots quiet on damp grass.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Rising tide on a fixed bow line pulls the transom under. Seen it snap cleats. She knows the water.

🌿 Jenny13:20

Jenny — walk out to the garden and bend down to inspect the edges of the heavy-duty tarp, checking for any loose ties.

💭 peek at the thought
Now it's just me and the plants. I can hear the silence rushing back in the moment he leaves.
