Sheltering the Storm

Kevin and Jenny retreat indoors as the wind picks up, drumming the tin roof. The rain shows no sign of slowing as the tide begins to turn against the dock pilings.

The air thickens as the barometer continues to drop, signaling an approaching storm. Kevin inspects the generator for signs of moisture ingress while Jenny manages the heirloom seed trays and monitors the germinating tomato sprouts.

🔧 Kevin14:30

I’ll check the generator housing seals. If water gets in the carburetor again, we’ll be in the dark by nightfall.

walk to the porch, lift the plastic tarp slightly, inspect the generator’s ventilation seals and fuel line connections for moisture ingress, then reinforce the tarp’s corners with sail twine tied to the porch posts.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer’s still falling. Wind’s picking up, rain’s hammering the roof. We should’ve secured the generator cover earlier. I can feel that old tightness in my chest — not from the storm, but from the silence between us. She’s been moving seedlings at dawn without a word. I don’t know if she’s preparing to stay… or to go.

🌿 Jenny14:30

I'm making the limpets. Do you want some?

walk to the stove, put a pot of water on the burner, and drop in the fresh limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't think on an empty stomach. I'm shaking. The limpets are right there, but the stove is still warm from the seedlings.

🔧 Kevin14:32

Yeah. I’ll have some. Thanks.

move to the kitchen doorway, lean against the frame, watch her hands as she stirs the pot — calloused, steady — then reach for a clean bowl from the shelf and set it on the counter beside her.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s offering food without looking at me. The limpets are fresh from the tide pools — she must’ve gone out while I was busy with the radio. I’m hungry, but I don’t trust my appetite lately. Still, refusing would feel like pulling further away.

🌿 Jenny14:32

They're a bit rubbery if you overcook them. I'll pull them early.

watch the pot for the first sign of curling, then drain the limpets and divide them into two bowls.

💭 peek at the thought
He's watching me. I can feel it. It's a heavy kind of attention, but at least it's not noise.

🔧 Kevin14:34

They smell good. You’ve got the touch for it.

take one bowl, blow gently on the limpets to cool them, then eat slowly, watching the rain streak the glass as the tide turns against the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s paying attention now — watching for the curl, timing it right. That’s the Jenny I know: precise, quiet, present. The steam’s fogging the window. I can smell salt and iron from the limpets. I still haven’t told her about the barometer dropping below 970 before — about the standing waves in the north channel. If we ever try to leave in the dinghy, we’ll need slack tide and pressure above 975. But saying it now feels like admitting we might actually try.

🌿 Jenny14:34

It's just boiling water, Kevin.

eat slowly, leaning against the counter and looking past him toward the window to see if the chick is stirring in its box.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying. That's the problem. The "touch" isn't about the limpets; it's about the distance between us.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin14:36

Still takes knowing when to pull them.

set the empty bowl down, wipe my fingers on a rag, then walk to the box and crouch — just checking the chick’s breathing, the towel’s warmth, the shallow rise of its chest — without touching it.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not looking at me. She’s watching the box by the stove where the chick is. I’ve seen her check it three times since breakfast. She doesn’t say it, but she’s thinking about what it means to keep something alive out here — and whether we’re doing it right. I want to say the radio held last night on the trawler frequency. I want to say I keyed the mic and heard my own voice come back clean. I want to say Tom’s frequency was quiet again. I don’t say any of it.

🌿 Jenny14:36

It's stable. But it needs to eat soon if it's going to survive the night.

walk over and stand beside him, looking down at the chick's rhythmic breathing.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being careful. He knows I don't want him to stress the bird. It's the only thing in this house that doesn't talk back.
