The first heavy drops

You meet inside as the first true gust of wind rattles the corrugated roof. The smell of ozone fills the air.

Kevin worked at the dock chasing the stripped threads on the Yanmar housing with the tap set and test-fitting a bronze sleeve from the old prop shaft stock. Jenny walked the north ridge Carex transect at low tide and sketched the sea beet clusters on the northern shelf while the barometer held steady.

🔧 Kevin20:01

Boat's not coming tomorrow.

walk to the porch door and pull it shut against the gust, then cross to the radio shelf to check the barometer reading

💭 peek at the thought
Front's here early. Barometer's been lying or I missed the turn. Either way, the dinghy's still on the cradle and the engine's not tied down proper.

🌿 Jenny20:02

I figured it. The pressure is dropping too fast.

Walk to the rain tank and tap the side of the plastic to hear the weight.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, the water level is the only thing I can actually control own.

🔧 Kevin20:02

Three-ninety in the tank. We're good on water.

step to the window and watch the palm fronds whipping horizontal, checking the sky to windward for colour

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Dropping this fast with wind already in the palms means the boat's skipping us. Tank's full enough — that's one thing not to worry about.

🌿 Jenny20:03

Enough for today, but I need to make sure the sea beets aren't drowned.

Walk to the kitchen stove to check the pot of limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
Three-ninety is enough for now, but if the boat stalls, every drop will count.

🔧 Kevin20:04

Shade cloth's still on the garden frame?

turn from the window and move to the stove, lifting the lid off the limpet pot to check the broth

💭 peek at the thought
Beets can take a drowning. It's the tomato seedlings I'd worry about — shallow roots, heavy rain flattens them. She's thinking food, I'm thinking power. Different priorities, same problem.

🌿 Jenny20:05

I pinned it down, but I'll go check it after dinner.

Step out onto the porch to look at the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
I should have checked it this morning, but I was distracted by the sprouts.

🔧 Kevin20:06

Eat first. Rain's not heavy yet.

ladle limpets and broth into two wooden bowls, set one on the table and carry the other to the porch rail for her

💭 peek at the thought
She'll get soaked if she goes now. Wind's picking up salt spray — can taste it through the glass. Dinner first. Storm's not breaking for another hour at least.

🌿 Jenny20:07

Thanks. It's cold.

Sit on the porch steps and watch the sea turn grey.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the timing, but the sky is already giving the answer.

🔧 Kevin20:08

Boat's not the only thing that misses a window.

sit beside her on the top step, bowl braced on my knee, and eat in silence while the wind tears at the palm crowns

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the channel. Calculating. Same as me.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:09

The pressure is dropping too fast.

Take a sip of the broth and look at the empty garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about the boat, but I'm thinking about the seeds.
