Approaching Storm

The wind picks up from the north, and the first drops of rain hit the hot dust.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin20:58

Rain's here. Going to batten the dinghy down proper before the dock takes a beating.

Walk to the dinghy at the end of the jetty, check the mooring lines and fenders, double up the bow line to the cleat with a round turn and two half hitches, then run a spring line from midships to the shore bollard.

💭 peek at the thought
Weather's turning faster than the barometer suggested. North wind means the swell will wrap around the headland and hit the dock broadside. Need to secure the dinghy properly — not just the stern line.

Watch the way on the way, they're slick.

Pick up the tin of seeds and tuck it under my arm, walking back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind gets any stronger, the seeds will be lost before I even de-acid the soil.

Aye. Watch your step on the starboard plank — third one in, soft in the middle.

Finish securing the spring line, cinch it tight, then walk back up the jetty toward the cottage, testing each plank before committing weight.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the planks. Two rotten ones I haven't replaced yet, and wet timber turns to ice. She's taking the seeds inside — smart. The tin's been damp enough.

🌿 Jenny21:01

I see it.

Step over the soft plank and reach the cottage door.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the wood is turning to mush under the salt.

🔧 Kevin21:02

Kevin — pause at the cottage door, glance back at the dinghy dancing at the end of its lines, then step inside and pull the door shut against the rising wind.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's clear. Now the dinghy's the only thing left exposed. If the swell builds like I think it will, the bow's going to take a pounding against the pilings.

🌿 Jenny21:03

Close the door tight.

Set the seed tin on the kitchen table and look for Kevin.

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity is going to ruin my sketches if I don't get them inside now.

🔧 Kevin21:04

Kevin — throw the heavy latch, seat it home with the heel of my hand, then turn to face the room — kettle on the stove, seed trays on the table, the radio silent in its corner.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's got teeth now. Door needs the latch thrown proper, not just pulled to.

🌿 Jenny21:05

Rain's coming in hard.

Wipe the condensation off the seed tin and look at the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; I hope the boat makes it in two days.
