Afternoon Gathering

The air grows heavy and still as the wind dies down. You meet in the cottage to discuss the approaching supply boat and the potential storm.

The tide is rising quickly, lapping at the lower stones of the dock as Kevin returns from the water after checking the mooring lines. Inside the cottage, the air is thick with the scent of drying mint and the sharp tang of curing epoxy from the Yanmar project. The barometer continues to drop.

🌿 Jenny22:13

The pressure is at 1004 and falling. We need to move the seed tin off the porch before tonight.

Close the notebook and stand up to check the horizon from the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast for a clear evening; if that boat doesn't show tomorrow, I'm going to run out of salt and hope.

Aye. Tin goes on the stove shelf. Dinghy's double-lashed but I'll check the seacocks and painter again at slack. You want the radio on watch or secured?

walk to the porch and lift the heirloom seed tin, carrying it inside to set on the stove shelf

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's dropping faster than I'd like. Wind dying's the worst sign — means the front's close. She's right about the seed tin. And the dinghy needs checking if we're taking her out tomorrow.

🌿 Jenny22:15

Leave it on. I'll monitor the frequencies while I finish the mint.

Walk to the kitchen table and inspect the drying sprigs on the paper towel.

💭 peek at the thought
If he stays on the radio, he won't see the water changing, but I need to hear from that boat.

Generator oil first. Then I'll walk the dock lines at low water.

check the generator oil level and top up from the can, then walk down to the dock to inspect the mooring lines at low tide

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She'll catch any call from the boat. Mint's drying clean — no mold on those sprigs. I should check the generator oil and top the tank before dark. And the liferaft grab bag's still in the dry box by the door — she knows where it is.

🌿 Jenny22:17

Be careful on the dock; the tide is coming in faster than usual.

Pick up a sprig of mint and rub the leaves between my fingers to release the oil.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always focused on the mechanical parts of survival while the biological ones rot under our feet.
