Evening meal

Kevin and Jenny meet on the porch as the sun begins to dip. The air is cooling slightly, and the smell of boiling limpets fills the kitchen.

Kevin spent the afternoon testing the Yanmar engine under load to ensure it is ready for the supply boat arrival. Jenny focused on the heirloom seed trays, monitoring the germination in the dry heat. They met in the cottage for the evening as the sun set.

Evenin'.

walk onto the porch and lean the wrench against the doorframe, then pull out the radio logbook and flip to today's page

💭 peek at the thought
The smell hits before I step through the door — limpets and corned beef fat, the same meal three nights running. My stomach turns at it but my hands know the rhythm: wipe grease on the rag, hang the rag, pull the radio log. Routine holds the shape of things.

🌿 Jenny23:17

The limpets are done. How was the engine?

wipe my hands on my apron and gesture toward the bowl on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's hungry enough to eat the notebook. I'm still thinking about those tomato seeds.

🔧 Kevin23:18

Good. Held load clean. Oil pressure steady, temp flat. Sleeve's seating right. Ready for sea trial when the weather breaks.

set the logbook on the table and pull out a chair, sitting heavy and reaching for the bowl of limpets

💭 peek at the thought
Held 1800 RPM for twenty minutes. Oil pressure steady at 3.2 bar. Temp never climbed past 82°C. No smoke, no water in the fuel bowl. The bronze sleeve's seating clean. She doesn't need the numbers but she'll want the verdict.

🌿 Jenny23:19

Good. I'm worried about the seeds—the humidity is still in the tin.

sit across from him and start eating a limpet, watching the light fade over the water.

💭 peek at the thought
If the engine holds, I can finally get to the ridge tomorrow. I need to see that lichen growth.

🔧 Kevin23:20

Stove's been running. Air's drier in here. Move the tin to the shelf above it tonight. Lid off. Paper underneath. Turn the packets every few hours.

pull a limpet from its shell with the small fork, chew slow, and reach for the tin of coffee to pour two mugs

💭 peek at the thought
She's been at those seeds all day — sorting, drying, labeling. The tin's been damp since the crate washed up. Heirloom tomato, pepper, basil, lettuce. Thirty cells germinating on the kitchen table. If the humidity stays high, mold takes the lot. We lose next season before it starts.

🌿 Jenny23:21

I'll do that. I don't want to lose the tomato ones to the mold.

take the mug of coffee and look at the seed tin on the shelf, calculating the airflow in my head.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the stove. The dry heat is the only thing fighting this damp. I need to be careful with them.

🔧 Kevin23:22

Boat's due in ten. Barometer's rising. They'll bring fresh packets if we ask.

blow across the coffee mug, then set it down and pull the radio log closer, pen hovering over the page

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the mind for it — sees the air moving before it moves. Tomato packets had the worst mold, edges black. She separated them this morning, scraped the viable seed onto paper. Thirty cells already sprouted in the trays. If the tin dries right, we keep the rest. If not, we're down to what's in the trays and whatever the supply boat brings. Ten days out, barometer rising. Boat should make it.

🌿 Jenny23:23

We'll ask. But the mold is already so stubborn.

take a slow sip of the coffee and watch the shadows stretching across the kitchen floor.

💭 peek at the thought
Ten days. If the boat doesn't come, I'm down to these seeds. I can't risk the rest being ruined.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:24

You caught it. The viable ones are clean. Dry the tin tonight, tape the lid seal tomorrow. We keep what we've got.

write the engine numbers in the log — 1800 RPM, 3.2 bar, 82°C, twenty minutes — then close the book and push it aside

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn. That's the word. Black at the edges, creeping into the paper fibers. She caught it early — spread the packets on newspaper, fanned them with the lid of the biscuit tin. Viable seed looks plump, pale. Dead seed shrinks, darkens. She knows the difference. I've watched her learn it. The trays on the table: tomato, pepper, basil, lettuce. Thirty cells. Ten days to the boat. If the gale holds off Thursday, we get resupply. If not, we stretch.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:25

I'll tape the lid. I don't want any more moisture.

stand up and walk to the stove to move the seed tin to the top shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so practical. It's exhausting. I just see the whole season failing in those tiny packets.
