Engine held. Clean run. Now we batten for Friday.
walk into the kitchen, set the metal file and torque wrench on the table, pull the generator carburetor diaphragm spare from the shelf and check it's still sealed in its bag

Back from the dock. Yanmar ran clean at 1800 RPM for twenty minutes — oil pressure 45 psi, temp held 82°C, no smoke, no water in the fuel bowl. Good. The bronze sleeve held. The helicoil in the housing held. The prop shaft runs true. That's the engine sorted. Now the gale. Barometer's 1009 and rising but the forecast holds: Force 8 Friday, southwest backing west. Bad angle for the bar. Need to batten the generator, fuel stores, radio gear. And the garden — shade cloth's deployed but the tomato cages need tying down.

The humidity is climbing. If I don't get these dried on the stove now, the whole tin is gone.
Jenny picks up a fine-tipped brush and begins to clear a microscopic patch of white fuzz from a tomato seed.

He's so focused on the machine, and I'm staring at the mold on my life work.

Stove's warm. Keep the door cracked so they don't cook.
step to the porch, uncoil the new half-inch three-strand rope, cut a six-foot length for the generator hold-downs, and carry the rest back inside to the fuel locker

She's racing the damp. Every seed packet that came off the supply boat carries mold at the edges. The tomato ones are worst — thin coats, high sugar. She's been at it since first light. Brush, magnifier, paper towels on the stove shelf where the heat drifts. Viable seeds go in the heirloom tin. Compromised go in the jar for the rat trap, or the fire. I should check the generator fuel line while she works. And the radio mast bracing — the new insulator's holding but the stay tension slipped last blow.

Jenny — jenny spreads the tomato seeds onto a clean sheet of paper, laying them out in a single thin layer to ensure maximum airflow.
💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the airflow, but the heat might kill the embryos before the mold. ownSAY: I'll leave the door open. I just need to see which are still viable.

Generator fuel locker's sealed. Rope's cut for the hold-downs. Going to brace the radio mast stays now — tension slipped last blow.
walk out the porch door toward the radio mast, carrying the coil of new rope and the adjustable wrench

Methodical. Single layer, no clumping. She's turning the paper every hour — I've watched her. The stove shelf holds maybe twenty sheets at once. At this rate the tomato packets take two days. Peppers and basil after. Lettuce is tougher, coats stick. She'll lose some. But the tin's building up: rows of labeled envelopes, each dated, each variety separate. Brassica oleracea. Beta vulgaris. Solanum lycopersicum. She writes the Latin like it's a prayer.
