Night prep before the storm

The smell of salt and drying herbs fills the small space as the first heavy drops of rain hit the roof.

Kevin entered the dinghy to check the Yanmar mount bolts for any looseness but found no mechanical play despite the rising swell. Jenny checked the plastic tarp over the seed tin and secured the tension as the wind began to shift.

Check the way on the way, Kevin. The wind is shifting south.

Stands up and walks to the porch to check the tension of the plastic over the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is picking up again; if that leak gets through the thatch, the whole heirloom batch is lost to rot.

Aye. Going now.

Walk to the dock, checking the dinghy's stern line and the Yanmar mount bolts with a hand on each as I pass.

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the air better than the barometer tonight. South wind means the swell wraps around the headland — dock takes it broadside.

Watch out for the dock ring, it's still rattling under the swell.

Walks back to the table and picks up the pencil, returning to the sketch of the sea beet leaf.

He's being thorough with the bolts, but that shim is still not seated right if the tide rises.

Seen it. Got the bronze bolts and the drill in the skiff.

Step into the dinghy, crouch at the transom, and run my fingers along the Yanmar's lower mount bolts — feeling for any give the torque wrench might've missed.

💭 peek at the thought
She noticed the ring before I said a word. The shim's holding but the through-bolts need doing before the next big tide.
