Morning coffee before the tide

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch with the last of the real coffee, watching the high tide as the humidity rises.

The air is heavy and still as the wind begins to pick up from the north-east. The generator is secured and the seed trays are safe on the high shelf, but the tide is receding rapidly, exposing more of the rocky northern shelf than expected.

🌿 Jenny03:39

The air is holding its breath. We should bring the trays inside.

pull out the notebook and make a quick sketch of the cloud formation over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure drops any further, the storm will break before the boat even arrives.

Trays first. Then the generator cover. I'll check the dinghy lashings while you move them.

stand up from the porch step, wipe coffee mug rim with thumb, walk toward the dinghy at the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The pressure's dropping even if the barometer hasn't caught up yet. Clouds stacking over the north ridge like that — they'll squeeze rain out before noon.

🌿 Jenny03:42

Don't leave the cover off too long, the wind is picking up.

lift the first seed tray and carry it to the high shelf own the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always moving to the work while I'm stuck with the life.

🔧 Kevin03:42

Won't. Generator's under the porch awning. Two minutes.

walk down the dock to the dinghy, check the stern line chafe guard, pull the tarp tight over the engine and secure the bungee cords

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's already shifting — coming round to the northeast. She knows what that means for the crossing window.

🌿 Jenny03:43

Just hurry. The sky is turning the wrong color.

place the second tray on the shelf, careful not to jostle the sprouts.

💭 peek at the thought
Two minutes is all it takes for a gust to catch that tarp.

🔧 Kevin03:44

Back in three.

finish securing the dinghy tarp, tug the bow line to test the cleat, jog back up the dock toward the cottage porch

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen that colour before. Green-grey under the cloud base — hail core or worse, a squall line riding the front. Not just rain.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:45

The tide is high. Get the generator covered.

grab the last tray and move it to the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is shifting north now. I can feel the drop in my joints.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:46

On it.

pull the heavy canvas tarp from the porch hook, throw it over the generator housing, cinch the drawcord and stake the corners into the gravel with the tent pegs

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's lapping the dock planks. If the surge comes with the wind shift, the generator's the first thing to take water. She's already moving faster than me.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:47

Check the water tank next. I want to know if we're losing any.

walk to the back of the cottage to inspect the 400-litre tank.

💭 peek at the thought
way he's moving. The salt air is thick enough to taste.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:48

Checking.

walk around to the back wall, crouch at the tank base, run fingers along the outlet fitting and the feed line where it disappears into the cottage wall, check the overflow for drips

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's been steady at 397. If we're losing water now, it's not evaporation. Could be the feed line cracked where it enters the stone — freeze-thaw from winter, or the rat's been chewing.
