The Storm Breaks

The sound of rain on the tin roof is deafening now. Inside, the air grows heavy and warm as the wind picks up outside the garden walls.

The air is heavy and still, smelling of salt and coming rain. The tide is rising against the dock, water lapping high at the new planks. Inside the cottage, the barometer continues its steady descent, signaling the storm is moving faster than predicted.

Kevin — walk to the porch and check the mast step lashing through the door

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's hitting hard. Good for the tank, bad for the mast step epoxy. Need to check the lashing before it fails completely.

The barometer is dropping fast, Kevin. Is the wayhy lashed down tight?

Close the notebook and move the seed tin to the table to keep it dry from the spray.

💭 peek at the thought
The storm is finally coming, and I hope the garden wall holds against the runoff.

Mast step's lashed. Epoxy didn't cure. Held last blow but this one's different. Going to double it.

grab the new rope coil from the porch and head to the dock to reinforce the mast step lashing

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the barometer closer than I am. Mast step's the weak point — epoxy never cured right in this humidity. Temporary lashing held through the last squall but that was nothing like what's coming.

🌿 Jenny07:01

Be careful on the dock, the wind is already catching the planks.

Stand by the window and watch the rain hit the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If that mast shifts, the whole rig is lost. I need to make sure the boat is secure.

Dock's sound. Ring bolt holds. Aft cleat's primary. Back in five.

walk down to the dock, dinghy tied alongside, and reinforce the mast step lashing with the new half-inch three-strand rope

💭 peek at the thought
Dock planks are new, ring bolt's sound, aft cleat takes the load. But wind's shifting — she's right to worry. Mast step on the dinghy first, then check the dock lines.

🌿 Jenny07:03

Don't stay out too long, the tide is coming in fast!

Plate the boiled limpets and wait for the door to open.

💭 peek at the thought
He's out there in the surge alone. I hope the salt doesn't degrade the new knots.
