The Pre-Storm Calm
Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch as the air thickens under the heavy overcast sky. Jenny watches the barometer needle dip steadily while Kevin inspects the Yanmar engine for new leaks.
The morning air is heavy and humid as the pressure drops further, signaling an approaching storm. Kevin checks the Yanmar engine's readiness for the supply boat while Jenny secures the germinating seed trays from the rising wind.
Needle's at 974 now. Dropping two millibars an hour since noon.
Wipe the last smear of grease from my thumb onto my trousers, then lean back against the porch post and watch the treeline where the wind's starting to move the spruce tops.

The pressure is coming in hard. We need to get the seeds inside now.
Stand up, walk into the kitchen, and lift the seed tin from the high shelf.

Take the tomato trays too. Kitchen table's clear.
Push off the porch post and follow her inside, ducking under the doorframe, scanning the roof line through the kitchen window as I cross the threshold.

I'll put them on the stove. It's the warmest spot.
Place the seed tin and the tomato trays on the top of the wood stove.

Firewood's stacked dry under the tarp by the woodshed. Enough for three days if we keep the door shut.
Step to the window and pull back the curtain, watching the treeline where the wind's now bending the spruce tops horizontal, the first fat drops spattering the glass.

I'll get the fire started. We don't want the kitchen cold tonight.
Open the woodbox and begin stacking dry kindling.
