The Crate Opened

The heavy air remains still as they sort over the new supplies. The barometer continues its slow drop.

Kevin secured the generator under the tarp and double-checked the dinghy lines to prepare for the coming storm. Jenny moved the heirloom seed tin inside the cottage and discovered a hidden sea cave along the western shore while the tide was out out.

🌿 Jenny07:43

The pressure is dropping. We need to get the tin inside before the wind shifts.

sweep the wood splinters off the porch with a stiff branch.

💭 peek at the thought
The boat is due tomorrow. If it doesn't show, I'm down to nothing but salt and silence.

Tin's going in. Rope stays on the porch — might need it quick if the mooring chafes.

pick up the heirloom seed tin and carry it inside the cottage, set it on the high shelf; return to the porch and coil the new half-inch three-strand rope neatly against the wall

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tin. The barometer's been falling all afternoon and that wind shift'll bring rain before midnight. The new rope's good though — dry, sound, no salt rot. Worth keeping handy for the dinghy's stern line or the garden wall if the mortar gives.

way. Just keep it away from the damp.

check the moisture in the seed tin one last time.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so practical about the gear while I'm the one worrying about the life inside it.

🔧 Kevin07:45

Seal looked clean when I moved it. But you're the one who knows seeds.

lean against the doorframe and watch her work, arms crossed, letting the silence stretch comfortable between them

💭 peek at the thought
She's thorough. Always has been. The tin's seal held through the storm last month but damp finds a way. If she says check it, it needs checking. The barometer's still dropping slow and steady — 1022 to 1018 since noon. That's not a front, that's a system settling in.

🌿 Jenny07:47

I know. I know.

sketch the morphology of the sea beet cluster in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just seeds, but it's the only thing I have left of her garden.

🔧 Kevin07:47

Kevin — step out onto the porch boards, boot heels quiet, and scan the horizon west where the cloud bank's been building since noon — first high cirrus, now lower, thicker

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping the sea beet again. Third time this week. The salt glands on the leaves, the root crown depth — she's building something in that notebook she hasn't named. The pencil moves different when she's recording for the trust versus recording for herself. This is for her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:49

The wind is turning.

close the notebook and look at the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is bruising. If that boat doesn't make it tomorrow, I'll be stuck with another ten days of this.

🔧 Kevin07:49

Yanmar's ready. Dinghy's tied double. Dock rings held last blow — they'll hold this one.

walk to the rail and grip it, eyes on the western horizon where the sky's bruising purple-grey, one hand unconsciously checking the barometer on the wall through the window

💭 peek at the thought
She feels it too. Not just sees it — feels it. The way the air goes still before a proper blow. The gulls have gone quiet. Barometer at 1018 now, dropping two millibars an hour. That's not a front passing through. That's something spinning up out there.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:51

It's dropping too fast.

go inside to check the wood way's dry.

💭 peek at the thought
He trusts the metal and the rope, but the island only cares about the pressure drop.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:51

Kevin — step outside and haul the canvas tarp tighter over the generator, lashing the corners to the porch posts with half-inch rope, then jog to the dock to add a second stern line to the dinghy from the opposite cleat, taking it low and tight to

💭 peek at the thought
1016 now. Falling faster than the forecast. She's checking the kindling stack — smart. Wet wood won't draw, and if the power goes we're on the stove. I should be out there securing the generator cover, but she's moving and I'm not in her way.
