the keeper's cottage · day 174 · evening

Evening before the squall

The two of you meet inside the cottage as the sky turns a bruised purple and the first heavy drops of rain hit the roof.

The pressure dropped and the wind picked up, signaling the approaching storm. Jenny managed to retrieve the seedling trays from the garden just as the first gusts hit, while Kevin secured the generator and the heavy shade cloth before the rain began to fall.

🌿 Jenny08:35

It's coming in harder than the forecast said. Check if the rain tank is latched.

wipe the salt from my hands and open my notebook to sketch the sea beet morphology before the light fails.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; I should have stayed at the cottage instead of pushing for the cave in this heat.

On it.

walk to the back wall, check the rain tank latch, secure it with the wire toggle if it's loose

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the forecast called for 2000, not now. Tank lid's been sticky since the last storm; if it blows off we lose 382 litres.

🌿 Jenny08:37

Thanks. The wind is picking up—check the generator too.

lean over the table and begin sketching the outline of the sea beet's glands while the memory is still sharp.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tank overflows, we lose the clean water we've worked so hard for.

🔧 Kevin08:38

Checking.

step onto the porch, pull back the tarp corner, verify the generator's exhaust elbow is tight and the fuel line isn't chafing against the frame

💭 peek at the thought
Generator's under tarp on the porch with fresh fuel and dry plugs from the last run. Should hold, but the exhaust elbow vibrates loose when the wind hits the porch just right.

🌿 Jenny08:39

The pressure is bottoming. We need to get everything inside.

press the pencil to the paper, shading the intricate structure of the salt glands on the leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving with purpose, and I'm still just tracing lines on a page.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:39

Porch first. Then the garden trays.

grab the generator by its frame and carry it through the kitchen door, set it on the stone floor away from the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's at 968 and still falling. Wind's backing southwest — the anchorage will funnel it straight up the dock. Everything loose on the porch goes inside or gets lashed.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:41

I'll get the tomatoes. They're too light for this.

drop the pencil and run out the back door, ducking against the sudden gust to reach the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind catches those trays, the seedlings will be lost in the scrub.

🔧 Kevin08:41

I'll take the frame. You get the trays.

run to the garden, assess the shade cloth frame, unclip the cloth and fold it, then dismantle the lightweight frame and carry the pieces to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She's fast and the tomatoes are tall — wind'll snap the stems before she gets them all. The shade cloth's deployed but it'll act like a sail on the frame. Need to secure the frame itself or bring the whole lot in.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:43

I've got them! Stay inside!

scoop up the seed trays, cradling them against my chest to shield them from the wind, and sprint toward the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is moving faster now. If those trays flip, the soil will be everywhere.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:43

Hold tight — I've got the door.

brace myself against the cottage door as Jenny reaches the porch, ready to pull her and the trays inside the moment she's in reach

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's hitting the garden wall now — those trays are light. If she loses grip they'll scatter and the seedlings are too tender to re-sow. I should've taken the frame and let her bring the trays in; now I'm exposed trying to secure the porch side.

🌿 Jenny08:45

Get them in! The rain is turning!

step over the threshold and set the trays carefully on the kitchen table, breathing hard.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally, inside. The wind sounds like it wants to peel the stone off the walls.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:45

Door's latched.

pull the heavy door shut against the gale, throw the iron latch, then lean back against it listening to the first hail ping off the roof

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's gone horizontal. The door catches the wind like a sail — need to latch it fast before it rips the hinges or slams on her fingers.
