Preparing for the rain

Kevin and Jenny return to the cottage as the first drops of rain hit the dust.

The pressure continues to dip as the onshore breeze picks up, bringing the scent of coming rain. Kevin has finished checking the dinghy lines and the radio ground, but the slick flagstones make the return treacherous, causing him to lose his footing and drop the fuel can near the cottage. Inside, Jenny has cleared the kitchen table, securing the seedling trays from the rising humidity and watching the barometer needle track the steady downward trend.

🌿 Jenny09:37

Close the door, Kevin. The rain is coming in hard.

Steps inside, wipes mud from the threshold, and latches the heavy wooden door.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping faster than I thought; I need to get those trays inside before the wind turns sharp.

Shutters first. Then the generator tarp.

walk to the kitchen window and dog the iron shutter latch, then move to the bedroom window and secure it

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here earlier than the barometer suggested. Door's latched. Good. Now the shutters and the porch gear before the wind backs.

🌿 Jenny09:39

I'll get the seedling trays off the porch. They're already damp.

Rushes to the porch, scoops up the plastic trays, and carries them to the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tarp catches a gust, it'll be shredded. I need to check the seedlings first.

🔧 Kevin09:39

Getting the generator cover. Fuel can too.

step out onto the porch, grab the heavy canvas tarp draped over the generator housing, and pull it tight over the engine, tying the corners to the porch rail cleats

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving fast. Good. The seedlings are the only thing we can't replace. Generator's next — tarp's on the porch but the fuel can's still by the shed.

🌿 Jenny09:41

Be careful with the fuel can, the stone is getting slick already.

Arranges the seedling trays on the table, checking the soil moisture with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast. If the wind picks up now, that tarp will act like a sail.

🔧 Kevin09:42

Back in a minute.

walk down the flagstone path to the woodshed, pick up the metal fuel can, and carry it back to the porch, setting it under the tarp beside the generator

💭 peek at the thought
Stone's slick. She's right. Fuel can's by the woodshed — twenty meters of wet flagstone. Take it slow. Generator's covered. Now the dinghy lines need a second look before the wind builds.

🌿 Jenny09:43

Hurry back. The sky is turning a nasty color.

Walks to the window and watches the needle on the way dip further.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is shifting. I need to check the barometer again before it really opens up.

🔧 Kevin09:43

Checking the dinghy lines. Then the radio ground.

walk down the slick flagstones to the dock, crouch at the stern cleat, and run fingers over the chafe guards on the two spring lines and the doubled bow line

💭 peek at the thought
Sky's bruising purple-grey. Barometer's dropping faster now. Dinghy's lashed but the stern cleat on the dock took a gouge last storm — need to check the chafe gear on the spring lines. And the radio aerial insulator's still the spare porcelain; if lightning hits the mast...
