Evening Preparation for the Gale

The rain intensifies as the wind picks up from the east. You and Kevin gather in the kitchen, the smell of damp wood filling the small space.

Kevin and Jenny ate boiled limpets for dinner at the cottage table while the wind rose outside. The porch door was sealed with epoxy and tape against the coming storm. They finished the meal together in the dimming light.

🌿 Jenny11:20

It's finally here.

walk to the stove and put a pan of limpets on to warm up.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is bottoming out. I can feel it in my joints. I need to eat something or I'm going to shake.

🔧 Kevin11:20

Aye. Barometer's still dropping. Wind'll back northeast by midnight if it holds true.

Walk to the porch door and check the lashings on the generator cover and the spare rope coils, making sure nothing's worked loose in the rising wind.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's settling in proper. Good she's cooking — keeps the stove hot, keeps us warm, keeps the damp off the seed trays. My ribs still ache from hauling the mast but the engine held. That's what matters.

🌿 Jenny11:22

Let the wind do what it wants, as long as the roof stays on.

move the seed trays a few inches further from the window, away from the draft.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always checking the ropes. Always securing the perimeter. He doesn't see the seedlings shivering on the table.

🔧 Kevin11:22

Porch door seal's shot. Wind's already whistling through. If the rain drives sideways, we'll have water on the floor.

Grab the roll of self-amalgamating tape and the tube of epoxy from the shelf, then crouch at the porch door to pack the gap along the threshold where the old rubber's rotted away.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the roof. But the draft she's dodging means the porch seal's gone — felt it whistling earlier. If the rain drives horizontal, the kitchen floor floods. Need to check the door sweep before it's too wet to fix.

🌿 Jenny11:24

I'll get you a rag to wipe the frame first, or the epoxy won't stick to the damp.

grab a clean rag from the counter and hand it to him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's treating the house like a leaking hull. I wonder if he thinks I'm just part of the cargo.

🔧 Kevin11:24

Thanks.

Wipe the door frame and threshold thoroughly with the rag, getting the salt crust and moisture out of the grain, then squeeze epoxy into the worst gaps and smooth it with a fingertip before wrapping the self-amalgamating tape over the whole

💭 peek at the thought
Good eye. Damp epoxy's useless epoxy. She thinks ahead while I'm still reacting.

🌿 Jenny11:26

Door's sealed. Now come eat before the limpets get cold.

scoop the warmed limpets onto two plates.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so meticulous. It's almost hypnotic, the way he treats a door like a surgical site. I'm starving.

🔧 Kevin11:26

Right behind you.

Wipe epoxy residue on a rag, set the tape and tube back on the shelf, and walk to the table to sit down across from her.

💭 peek at the thought
Smell of corned beef fat and brine — proper food. First hot meal since the crate came ashore. The storm can wait five minutes.

🌿 Jenny11:28

They're a bit chewy, but they're hot.

push a plate toward him and sit down with my own.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks exhausted. We both are. Just a few more days until the boat, if it even comes this time.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin11:28

Better than cold tinned beef.

Pick up a limpet with fingers, twist the foot free, eat it whole. Reach for another.

💭 peek at the thought
Chewy's good. Means they're real. My jaw works fine.
