← Day 18

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the keeper's cottage

The heavy rain brings a gift

Kevin is at the dock inspecting the crate found in the surf, while Jenny is at the cottage monitoring the radio.

Kevin works to secure the mast step while the epoxy is tacky, but the rising tide makes the dock slick. Jenny prepares the meal and monitors the garden as the air pressure drops.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You crouch by the crowbar, testing if the wood is swollen too much to pry open in the rain.

🔧 Kevin12:50

Kevin — wedge the crowbar under the lid's edge at a corner, lean weight in slow, feel for give. If it bites, work along the seam. If the wood screams, stop and get the right tools.

💭 peek at the thought
Crate's been sitting in saltwater and rain for god knows how long. Wood's swollen tight. Crowbar might split the lid before the nails give. Should've brought the hammer and nail puller from the shed. Too late now — work with what's in hand.

🔧 Kevin12:54

Kevin — haul the tins out one by one, set them on the dock planking to drain. Count them. Check seals. Roll the canvas and tarp clear of the wet. Kick the empty crate aside.

💭 peek at the thought
Lid came. Nails held the wood, wood didn't hold the nails. Inside: tins stacked neat, canvas rolls dry underneath, plastic tarp folded. Labels on the tins faded but legible enough — corned beef, coffee, maybe more. Whoever packed this knew what they were doing. Supply boat must've lost it overboard in a handoff, or the tide took it off the dock before they could winch it up. Either way, it's ours now.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the keeper's cottage

You sit by the radio, tuning through the static for any sign of life from the supply boat.

🌿 Jenny12:52

Come on, just a crackle. Give me something.

Turn the radio dial slowly, pressing the headset tight against my ear.

💭 peek at the thought
The static sounds like grinding teeth. If the barometer keeps falling, we're going to be trapped here with nothing but tinned beef and a broken mast.

🌿 Jenny12:56

Jenny — set the radio aside and walk to the porch to check the sky.

💭 peek at the thought
Still nothing. The silence between the static is worse than the noise. I can't keep sitting here staring at a dial while the sky turns the color of a bruise.
