The Approaching Tide

The heat continues to peak, and the air grows even stillier as the barometer continues its fall.

Kevin sistered two of three rotten dock stringers with epoxy and stainless screws before the tide turned. Jenny moved the heirloom seed tin to the stove shelf, wiped condensation from it, and watched the barometer drop to 1008 hPa. Kevin then ran a new half-inch three-strand spring line from the dinghy forward to the dock ring.

🌿 Jenny14:47

I'm starving. I'm going to eat.

Stand up, walk to the kitchen, pick up the bowl of boiled limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if the storm hits before the boat, those limpets will rot.

🔧 Kevin14:48

Save me a few.

walk up the jetty to the cottage, grab the bowl of limpets from the kitchen table, eat standing at the counter

💭 peek at the thought
She's eating the limpets cold. Good enough. My stomach's been growling since the tide turned. Need to sister those stringers before the water comes back up — got maybe two hours of workable tide left.

🌿 Jenny14:48

way don't get them cold.

Sit down at the table, watch the barometer needle drop.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always hungry, but there are only a few left if I'm not careful.

🔧 Kevin14:50

Knew that when I pulled them.

chew another cold limpet, glance at the barometer — 1009 and still falling, tap the glass with a fingernail

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Cold limpets are rubber. Should've warmed them in the skillet with the corned beef fat. Too late now.

🌿 Jenny14:50

The own is dropping. A storm is coming.

Pick up a limpet, taste the salt, look out at the half-weeded garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't even Notice the pressure shift, he just cares about the food.

🔧 Kevin14:52

Secured the shade cloth yesterday. Garden wall holds. Dock's the weak point.

set the empty bowl down, wipe fingers on jeans, walk back out to the jetty, crouch at the first rotten stringer with the epoxy tub and sister timber

💭 peek at the thought
She says it like a fact, not a guess. Barometer's been dropping all day. 1009 now. If it hits 1008 with this humidity, the swell comes fast. Garden's exposed. Shade cloth'll shred if we don't tie it down. Dock stringers halfway done — if the finger pier goes, the dinghy goes with it.

🌿 Jenny14:52

I'll check the barometer again. The seed tin is damp.

way up, walk to the kitchen, take the heirloom seed tin from the high shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fixing the wood while the life here dies from the inside.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:54

Move it to the driest spot. Top shelf by the stove.

brush epoxy thick on the sister timber, press it hard against the sound wood above the rot, drive two stainless screws through while the glue grabs

💭 peek at the thought
Damp tin means humidity's up. Seeds'll mould if they stay wet. She's moving them — smart. Should've done it days ago. Epoxy's warming in my hands now, tacky enough to hold. Two stringers left after this one. Tide's still dropping. Got time.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:54

It's already on the top shelf.

Place the seed tin on the highest ledge near the stove, wiping the condensation from the metal with my sleeve.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks if he fixes the wood, the island won't take us away.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:56

Good.

move to the second stringer, repeat — epoxy, sister timber, screws, wipe excess glue with thumb

💭 peek at the thought
She's sharp. Already did it. Condensation on the tin means the air's saturated. Barometer falling, humidity rising — classic pre-storm. Screw bites home. One stringer done. Two more. The epoxy's setting faster in this heat. Good.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:56

The barometer is at 1008. We need to secure the dinghy.

Walk back to the dock, stand at the edge, watch the palms strain in the gust.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is too heavy to breathe. It's like the island is inhaling.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:58

On it. Third stringer holds till after.

drop the drill, grab the coil of new half-inch three-strand from the porch, run down the jetty to the dinghy, start rigging a second spring line forward to the dock ring

💭 peek at the thought
1008. There it is. Swell's building out there — can see the whitecaps past the reef. Dinghy's tied with the new stern line splice, bow line's sound, but the spring lines are old rope. If the surge hits the dock broadside, the cleats'll rip out. Need double springs, chafe gear, and the engine cover on. Third stringer can wait. Boat first.
