Morning Prep and Observation

Jenny sorts the drying sea beet leaves while the morning light hits the seed trays. Kevin checks the barometer and notes the steady pressure as the onshore breeze picks up slightly.

Kevin heads to the dock with his tool roll to test the Yanmar engine under load on the dinghy. Jenny remains at the cottage to monitor the falling barometer, sketch sea beet morphology, and prepare the limpets for lunch.

Morning. Wind's holding northeast. Gonna take the dinghy out, put the Yanmar under proper load at the dock. Back before lunch.

walk to the dock with tool roll and spare plug

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer steady at 1011. Breeze onshore. Good window to test the Yanmar under load at the dock before the supply boat window closes. Seed trays look damp — Jenny's got them covered. Letter to Tom still sits on the table. One honest line. That's the task.

Keep an eye on the barometer. It's still dipping slightly.

Pick up the sea beet leaves and begin sketching the salt gland structure in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's testing the engine again. If he blows a seal, we're stuck with the oars for ten days.

Noted. Got the spare plug and the wrench. If it drops another two, I'm back and doubled up on the lines.

step into the dinghy, check fuel line and priming bulb, then fire the Yanmar

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — steady doesn't mean static. Dropped a millibar since I looked. Swell'll build by afternoon if it keeps tracking. Dinghy test needs doing now, not later.

Don't go too far. The pressure is still falling.

Sit on the porch and watch the smoke from the exhaust dissipate into the clean air.

💭 peek at the thought
The engine sound is too high. He's pushing it before it's even fully warmed up.

🔧 Kevin17:56

Dock only. Twenty minutes under load. Watch the gauge.

cast off the stern line, engage forward gear at idle, and motor the dinghy to the dock mooring ring

💭 peek at the thought
Engine catches clean. Oil pressure up. No smoke after the first breath. She's watching the barometer, watching me. Both of us know what falling pressure means here. Test it at the dock, put her in gear, hold load for twenty minutes. That's the job.

🌿 Jenny17:56

I'm watching.

Stand up and walk to the edge of the porch to get a better view of the engine cover.

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes under load is enough to see if that gasket holds or if it's weeping again.
