Evening - The Gathering Storm

The air has cooled and the wind picks up from the east. Kevin and Jenny return to the kitchen as the smell of rain precedes the first drop.

The storm breaks with a sudden lashing of rain that lashes the cottage roof. The heavy-duty tarp is secured, but the wind howls through the eaves. Inside, the sound of the downpour masks the frantic scratching coming from the pantry.

Got your post, Tom. I'm still here.

Walk into the kitchen, close the door, and lean against the stove, listening to the rain drum against the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's coming hard, blew through the vents, and the rain's already on the roof. If Tom's letter's still there, maybe he's waiting for me to say something.

The rain is coming in hard. We need to move the seed tin off the porch before it gets soaked.

Jenny closes her notebook and grabs the seed tin from the high shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping faster than I liked; we need to get the seeds inside before the wind catches them.

🔧 Kevin18:20

I'll get the tarp.

Cross to the porch door, pull the heavy-duty tarp roll down from its hook, and shake it open with a sharp snap of the wrists.

💭 peek at the thought
She's already moving before I can say it. Good.

🌿 Jenny18:23

Let me help with the corners - this wind will catch it easy.

Jenny moves to the porch doorway and reaches for one corner of the tarp to hold steady.

💭 peek at the thought
The tarp is heavy but I can help hold it while he unfolds it fully.

🔧 Kevin18:23

Hold the corner, I’ll tie the other end over the railing.

Grip the opposite corner of the tarp, pull it tight and fasten it over the porch railing with a simple knot.

💭 peek at the thought
The tarp's getting a good angle, Jenny’s steady hands are all I need.

🌿 Jenny18:24

It's tight enough. Let's get those seeds inside.

Jenny shifts the weight of the seed tin and steps back into the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
It's holding for now, but the wind is already tugging at the edges.

🔧 Kevin18:24

Watch the step.

Step in behind her, shoulder the door shut against the wind, and set the tin on the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
The tin's heavier than it looks, and the floor's slick from the door.

🌿 Jenny18:26

I'm fine. Did you check the tank?

Jenny sets the tin down on the table and rubs a hand over the metal surface.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the seeds are dry, but the sky looks like it's collapsing.

🔧 Kevin18:26

352 litres. Rising barometer means it'll top itself off.

Tap the gauge on the tank, then pull out a chair and sit, letting the rain noise fill the silence.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's rising, tank's still at 352. We're good for a few days if the rain holds.

🌿 Jenny18:28

I hope the roof holds. The wind is getting angry.

Jenny opens the seed tin and looks at the damp packets inside.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure of the numbers, but the pressure is still bottoming out.
