A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Jenny boiled limpets for lunch while sketching sea beet morphology. Kevin sat at the table with the unfinished letter to Tom. Both ate and then turned to their separate tasks.

(Nothing yet.)

Walk to the wood stove, set the cast iron skillet, and start boiling water for the limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping; I can feel it in my joints before the glass even confirms it. I'm hungry enough to eat my own sketches.

Kevin — walk to the kitchen table and pick up the letter to Tom

💭 peek at the thought
The skillet hits the stove with a dull ring. Water's heating. She's moving without words again — good. Means the silence isn't stuck. I'll check the letter on the table, see if the draft still says what I meant it to.

🌿 Jenny18:08

It's not finished yet, Kevin.

Drop the limpets into the boiling water and watch the steam rise.

💭 peek at the thought
way's looking at the letter. I haven't even finished the draft; it's just a mess of weather reports.

🔧 Kevin18:08

No. It's not.

set the letter back down on the table and pull out the chair to sit

💭 peek at the thought
She read it. Didn't ask, just knew. Or saw the page. Either way — she's right. It's not finished. One honest line was the plan. The page has half a page of crossed-out starts.

🌿 Jenny18:10

I should check the tank for sediment after we finish eating.

Pick up the notebook and pencil, starting on the morphology of the sea beet leaves while the water boils.

💭 peek at the thought
way's too quiet today. He knows the barometer is falling, and he knows the garden is still a mess of weeds.
