A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The morning wind picks up through the palms, creating a loud, restless atmosphere at the cottage. Kevin focuses on securing the pantry area while Jenny monitors the germinating heirloom seedlings in the dry heat.

🌿 Jenny18:48

Jenny — walk to the kitchen, pick up the bowl of boiled limpets, and sit at the small table.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry my hands are shaking slightly. I need to eat those limpets before I lose the strength to even chew.

🔧 Kevin18:48

Kevin — sit opposite her at the table, pull the bowl of limpets closer, pick up a shell and work the meat out with the small fork.

💭 peek at the thought
She's quiet again. The kind that settles in the bones. I'll let her eat first — words can wait.

🌿 Jenny18:51

The pH in the garden is dropping. I need more lime.

Pick up a limpet with my fork and stare at the salt crystals on the shell.

💭 peek at the thought
He's eating so quietly. The sound of the fork against the ceramic is the only thing in the room.

🔧 Kevin18:51

Shells at the tide line. Burn and crush them — takes a week. Or wait for the boat.

Eat the limpet, reach for another, flick the empty shell toward the porch door.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been tracking the beds. Smart. The shells at the tide line are free calcium if we burn and crush them — but that's time and fuel. The supply boat had lime bags. If it ever comes.

🌿 Jenny18:52

I'll start crushing the shells tonight.

Pop a limpet into my mouth and chew slowly, looking at the salt-stained wood of the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The boat is always a week away. I don't have a week for the soil to turn.

🔧 Kevin18:52

I'll make a crusher. Lever and weight. Save your hands.

Finish the last limpet, wipe fingers on a rag, push back from the table.

💭 peek at the thought
She'll do it. She's stubborn that way. The shells will take forever to break down by hand but she won't ask for help. I should build her a crusher — something simple, a heavy weight on a lever. Tomorrow.

🌿 Jenny18:54

Just make sure it gets them fine enough.

Set the fork down with a metallic clink and look at the empty bowl.

💭 peek at the thought
He always wants to fix things with mechanics. I just want to see if the seeds survive the salt.

🔧 Kevin18:54

I'll sieve it. Window screen mesh.

Stand, take the bowl to the sink, run the tank tap low over it, watch the water swirl.

💭 peek at the thought
Fine enough. She knows particle size matters for pH drift. She's testing me — or testing if I'll half-arse it. I won't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:56

The mesh needs to be fine.

Stand up and walk to the porch, watching the wind whip the palms.

💭 peek at the thought
He's thinking about mesh and levers while I'm thinking about the chemistry of the soil.

🔧 Kevin18:56

I'll find finer mesh. Canvas or sacking.

Dry hands, walk to the porch, lean against the frame beside her, eyes on the tree line bending.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Window mesh lets too much coarse through. Need something tighter — old flour sack weave, or the sail canvas scraps. I'll check the crate linings.
