Epoxy and humidity

Kevin kneels by the dinghy on the dock, applying epoxy to the freshly drilled mast step while the air remains heavy. Jenny gathers the tools for the garden wall as the tide continues to retreat from the pilings.

The humidity remains high at dawn, preventing the epoxy from curing properly on the mast step. Kevin focuses on mechanical maintenance of the dinghy while Jenny explores the interior ridge. The falling tide reveals access to the pools near the shore.

Wall's next. You want the lime mixed first or the blocks staged?

fair the epoxy on the mast step bolts with the putty knife, smoothing the fillets while the resin's still workable

💭 peek at the thought
Epoxy's still tacky from yesterday — humidity's holding it back. Should've drilled and bolted it like the notebook says. Mechanical beats chemical. But the spar's already drilled, bolts are in. Just need this fairing to hold the shape. Forearms burn from the crowbar work on that crate. Low tide means I've got time before the water comes back.

Stage the blocks. I don't want to be mixing lime while we're still figuring out where the line goes.

Set the trowel and level on the dock planking, careful to avoid the rotten spots.

💭 peek at the thought
He's still fussing with that epoxy. If it doesn't cure in this humidity, he's just painting the wood with expensive glue.

String's in the tool bag. Corner to gate post — forty feet, give or take.

wipe hands on a rag, pick up the string line and chalk from the tool bag, walk toward the garden path where the blocks are stacked

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Line first, mortar second. Saves rework. The blocks are stacked by the garden path — fifty, maybe sixty. Need to run a string from the cottage corner to the old gate post. Level's good, trowel's clean. My forearms will hate the lifting but the epoxy can sit.

🌿 Jenny13:22

Exactly forty feet, please. Not "give or take."

Follow him toward the garden, carrying the level.

💭 peek at the thought
"Give or take" isn't a measurement. It's an invitation for the wall to lean.

🔧 Kevin13:24

Forty feet.

measure the distance from the cottage corner to the gate post with the string, pull it tight, snap a chalk line on the ground

💭 peek at the thought
Forty feet. Not give or take. She's been measuring things since before the storm. I used to eyeball bulkhead spacing on a rolling deck and call it good. She wants the line true. Fair enough — the wall's hers, I'm just the mule.

🌿 Jenny13:24

Better. Now let's see if the soil is actually stable enough for a foundation.

Kneel by the chalk line and poke a finger into the earth to check the moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually doing it. Now we just have to see if the ground holds the line or if the slope ruins the level.
