Morning Heat and Seed Prep

Jenny and Kevin sit over the seed trays as the morning sun warms the wood stove. Kevin checks the water level in the tank while Jenny sketches the sea beet morphology in the island notebook.

The morning is hot and still as the island waits for the supply boat. Jenny checks the germinating heirloom seedlings in the kitchen while Kevin prepares the dinghy for a final engine test run.

🌿 Jenny01:00

The limpets are ready. I'll boil them before I head to the northern shelf.

Put the pot on the stove and scrub the limpets in cold water.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is holding for now, but the air feels too heavy. I hope the boat actually comes with the salt I need this time.

🔧 Kevin01:00

Right. I'll take the dinghy out, put the engine under load at the dock. Back before the tide turns.

walk to the porch, pick up the tool bag and the spare spark plug, head down the path to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's moving on the limpets. I'll let her handle the pot — she's got the rhythm for it. I need to get the Yanmar on the dinghy warmed up and run it under load at the dock like I planned. The barometer's holding at 1037, steady. Weather's giving us a window.

🌿 Jenny01:02

Don't stay out too late, the wind is starting to shift.

Fill the pot with water and set it on the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always busy with the engine, like if he can fix the island with a wrench and a spark plug.

🔧 Kevin01:02

Won't. Twenty minutes at the dock, then back.

step into the dinghy, settle the tool bag forward, reach for the starter cord

💭 peek at the thought
Wind shifting. She feels it before the barometer drops. I'll run the Yanmar hard for twenty minutes, check oil pressure and exhaust colour, then bring her back in. Plenty of time.

🌿 Jenny01:04

Jenny — light the stove and wait for the water to bubble.

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes. It's always twenty minutes until the engine decides otherwise.

🔧 Kevin01:04

Kevin — pull the starter cord — smooth, deliberate — and listen for the Yanmar to catch

💭 peek at the thought
Starter cord's frayed at the eye — noted yesterday. Give it a smooth pull, don't snatch. She'll catch.

🌿 Jenny01:06

Watch the current on the way.

Drop the limpets into the water once it hits a rolling boil.

💭 peek at the thought
If that engine holds, maybe I can actually make it to the northern shelf before the heat peaks.

🔧 Kevin01:06

Running clean. Taking her out.

shift into forward gear, ease the throttle up until the prop bites and the stern line tensions, hold it there under load

💭 peek at the thought
Caught first pull. Runs clean at idle. Exhaust clear, no blue smoke. Let it warm a minute, then put it in gear and hold it against the dock line — that's the test.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:08

Keep an eye on the temperature.

stir the limpets with a wooden spoon so they don't stick to the bottom.

💭 peek at the thought
It's humming. For once, the sound isn't screaming.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:08

Temp's normal. Oil pressure good. Holding steady.

watch the temperature gauge and exhaust, keep the throttle steady under load for the full test run

💭 peek at the thought
Engine's pulling steady against the line. No vibration, no smoke, oil pressure holding. Temperature gauge climbing normal. This is what I needed to see — the bronze sleeve holding, the housing bolts tight, the prop shaft true. Ten more minutes at this load, then shut her down.
