Morning radio check and crate inventory

Kevin sits at the kitchen table with the shortwave, adjusting the tuner toward Tom's frequency while the generator hums outside. Jenny stands at the porch door, coffee in hand, watching the high tide lap the dock planks where the loose bolt still needs epoxy. The waterlogged crate rests on the porch floorboards, salt-crusted and heavy, its lid pried loose but not yet lifted.

The heavy wood lid of the waterlogged crate finally yielded with a sharp crack, splintering under tension as Jenny threw her weight against the crowbar. Kevin stood by the radio, his hand still gripping the transmit key as he spoke into the static, listening for a ghost-signal, while Jenny peered into the dark, salt-scented interior.

🌿 Jenny01:56

The radio is just static, Kevin. The boat isn't coming early.

Walk to the porch and use the crowbar to pry the crate fully open.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast for a calm morning; if I don't fix that bolt, the tide takes the dock.

Not listening for the boat.

adjust the tuner knob slowly, filtering through the hash, holding the mic ready

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the boat. The static's been nothing but atmospheric noise for days. But Tom's frequency — it's not about the boat. It's about the silence between us that's stretched longer than any passage I've sailed. The crate can wait. The radio can't.

Then listen to the wind. It's louder than the radio.

Wedge the crowbar under the lid of the crate and lean my weight against it to snap the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always hiding in the static when the world is literally rising around us.

🔧 Kevin02:00

Wind doesn't carry voices from three hundred miles out.

keep the mic keyed, thumb on the transmit button, calling Tom's call sign in the pauses between static bursts

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's not going to carry a voice from the mainland. But she's not wrong about the crate — salt's eaten the wood fibers, lid'll give if she keeps at it. Let her work. I need this frequency.

🌿 Jenny02:00

It carries the storm, which is enough for us right now.

Give the crowbar a final, violent twist to rip the lid off the crate.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking to ghosts on the air while the wood is rotting under our feet.

🔧 Kevin02:02

Barometer says different.

hold the mic up, finger still on transmit, calling sign once more — "Victor Kilo Four November Tango, this is Victor Kilo Four November Tango, over" — then release and listen

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's not here yet. Barometer's steady at 1037. She's jumping ahead — always jumping ahead. The crate cracks open. Salt crust flies. Let her see what's inside. I'm not leaving this frequency until the skip kills it or a voice answers.

🌿 Jenny02:02

The barometer isn't going to fix the dock.

Kick the lid aside and look inside the dark interior of the crate.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer doesn't care about his feelings, just the pressure on the glass.

🔧 Kevin02:04

Coffee's worth a dock bolt.

set the mic down, finally, and stand to see what else the crate gave up

💭 peek at the thought
Dock bolt's not going anywhere in the next hour. Neither is this radio. But she's already decided what matters. The crate spills open — tins, rope, the smell of old salt and coffee. Good coffee. Real coffee. That's worth more than a weather report.
