Apart — Kevin at the keeper's cottage, Jenny at the dock

Midday work and the tide’s pull

Kevin is at the keeper's cottage; Jenny is at the dock

Kevin checks the rat trap in the pantry and finds a catch, which he prepares for food. Jenny spends the afternoon attempting to reinforce the dock seaward bolts, but finds the wood too soft to hold the hardware.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the keeper's cottage

You are in the kitchen of the keeper's cottage. The cast iron skillet sits on the stove. You walk to the pantry to check the trap you set with corned beef bait.

Kevin — walk to the pantry and check the rat trap

💭 peek at the thought

Quiet here without her. Just the stove ticking and the wind finding the porch boards. Rat's been bold — scratching behind the flour shelf last night like it pays rent. Corned beef fat on the trigger should bring it in. If not, I'll try peanut butter tomorrow. Or a piece of that mackerel.

Kevin — remove the dead rat from the trap and carry it outside to dispose of it well away from the cottage

💭 peek at the thought

Trap snapped clean. Rat's dead — neck broken, no suffering. Good. One less mouth in the stores. Need to dispose of it far from the cottage, reset with fresh bait. They run in pairs usually.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the dock

You are on the dock, standing where the seaward bolt loosened. You look at the plank Kevin pried up and the soft, rotted wood around the bolt hole. You reach for the nail puller to inspect the damage closer.

🌿 Jenny02:14

Jenny — kneel on the dock and press a thumb into the rotted wood to see how deep the decay goes.

💭 peek at the thought

The wood is like wet cardboard; if I try to force a washer in here, it'll just pull right through the next time the boat hits the jetty.

🌿 Jenny02:18

Jenny — stand up and wipe the salt and wood pulp off my hands.

💭 peek at the thought

I can't use the bolt on this; it needs to go through to the frame underneath or bypass this section entirely.
