The Weight of Pressure

Jenny kneels on the hot planks, fitting a bronze sleeve over a stripped bolt hole with a file. Kevin stands over her, watching the barometer needle as it continues its slow downward crawl against the glass face.

The morning heat beats down on the dock as the pressure begins to drop. Kevin works on reinforcing the seaward bolts using fashioned metal washers to compensate for the soft wood. Jenny tends to the germinating seedling trays, checking the moisture levels in the punishing dry sun.

🌿 Jenny02:50

Hold the light steady, Kevin. I need to see the threading before I set it.

File the edge of the bronze sleeve until it sits flush with the rotten timber.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if the wood doesn't hold these sleeves, the whole jetty goes when the next surge hits.

Light's steady. Barometer's at 1034. Dropping two millibars an hour since dawn.

hold the LED headlamp beam fixed on the bronze sleeve and bolt hole, one eye on the barometer mounted on the porch post

💭 peek at the thought
She's steady with the file. Better hands for fine work than I gave her credit for. The barometer's still falling — three millibars since midnight. If it drops another four in the next six hours, the glass is telling us something the radio voice won't.

🌿 Jenny02:52

If it hits 1030, I'm moving the seedlings to the south slope regardless of the plan.

Wipe the metal shavings from the sleeve and test the fit in the hole.

💭 peek at the thought
Two millibars an hour? That's not just a shift, that's a front moving in fast.

🔧 Kevin02:52

South slope's got the drainage. Wind hits it last. Move them when it hits 1030.

keep the headlamp steady on her work, glancing at the barometer every few seconds

💭 peek at the thought
South slope gets the morning sun but shields from the westerly. Smart move if the barometer keeps diving. She's thinking ahead — seedlings, storm track, the lot.

🌿 Jenny02:54

I'll have them moved. Don't let the light slip.

Apply a thin layer of epoxy to the sleeve and press it into the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the drainage, but I'm too weak to carry those trays twice if the wind shifts.

🔧 Kevin02:54

Light's not moving. Needle's at 1032. Still falling.

hold the headlamp beam rock-steady on the epoxy work, wrist braced against the porch rail

💭 peek at the thought
Epoxy's thick in this heat. Sets faster. She's working clean — no air gaps, no rush. The barometer needle hasn't paused. 1032 now. Two millibars in ten minutes.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:56

Get the heavy washers from the kit. The wood is too soft.

Hold the sleeve in place while the epoxy cures.

💭 peek at the thought
1032... we're running out of time. If this doesn't set, the salt water will artwork the bolts right out.

🔧 Kevin02:56

On it.

walk to the workshop, pull the tool kit from the shelf, dig out the heavy stainless washers, return to the porch and set them in her palm

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The seaward timbers are punk — salt and rot go deep. Washers spread the load. Should've had them ready.
