The Damp Heat

The two of you meet in the kitchen to plan the day before the boat arrives.

Kevin tested the Yanmar engine on the dinghy under load at the dock and it held. Jenny moved the damping-off pepper seedlings to the driest corner of the cottage kitchen and began sketching sea beet morphology. A sudden slip on the wet dock planks wrenched Kevin's ankle as he stepped back from the engine test.

Barometer’s steady at 1033. Tide’s high. I’ll test the Yanmar under load at the dock this morning—see if it holds with a prop in the water. After that, check the rat trap and reset it. You want to come with me to the dock, or stay and work on the seedlings?

Pour myself a mug of weak coffee from the pot on the stove, then lean against the counter, waiting for her answer.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure’s holding, but the air feels thick. I’m restless, but not from the weather—Tom’s letter’s still unwritten, and I keep turning it over like a bad bolt. Jenny’s quiet too; she’s been watching the seedlings like they might vanish if she looks away. I need to move, to do something with my hands before I start saying things I don’t mean.

🌿 Jenny06:20

I'll stay. The humidity is killing the peppers and I need to move the cells.

Take a slow sip of coffee and look down at the kitchen table, inspecting the white fuzz on the damp soil.

💭 peek at the thought
If I stay, I'll watch them die while he plays engines; if I go, I lose the whole batch.

🔧 Kevin06:22

Right. I’ll take the radio down to the dock in case the supply boat raises us early. If the Yanmar holds, I’ll bring the dinghy back to the beach and check the mooring ring again—see if the epoxy’s set on the sistered knee.

Rinse the mug, set it on the draining board, and pull my oilskin off the hook by the door.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not looking at me. The fuzz on the soil isn’t the only thing she’s studying. I’ve seen that stillness before—when the engine room goes quiet and you know something’s coming loose. I should say something. Anything. But the words stick in my throat like salt-crusted rope.

Be careful with that ring, the wood is still soft.

Pick up the tray of pepper seedlings and move them to the driest corner of the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking for the exit strategy while I'm stuck here watching the rot.

🔧 Kevin06:24

Aye. I’ll check the bolts first, see if they’ve walked. If the ring shifts, I’ll wedge it with cedar shims and lash a secondary line to the cleat. Not pretty, but it’ll hold till dry weather.

Open the porch door and step out into the warm rain, pulling the hood up.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right. The timber’s green still, swollen from the rain. The epoxy won’t cure proper in this damp, and the mortise walls are crushed from the last swell. I knew that when I drove the bolts. Knew it and did it anyway. Sometimes you make the repair you can, not the one that lasts.

🌿 Jenny06:24

Just don't force it, the wood might give way.

Get a clean cloth and gently wipe away the white mold from the healthiest looking lettuce leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks about shims and lines like he can stop the island from taking everything back.

🔧 Kevin06:26

Won’t force it.

Walk down the path to the dock, boots sinking in the wet grass, the radio tucked under my arm.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s talking about the dock, but she’s not looking at the dock. I’ve forced things my whole life—bolts, engines, my own silence. The wood gives way. The metal strips. The letters stay unwritten. I nod to a warning I already know, because it’s easier than saying I hear her.

🌿 Jenny06:26

I'll be here at the stove.

Sit at the kitchen table and start sketching the sea much morphology, focusing on the way it curls under the humidity.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so confident in that wood, but I can see the rot creeping from here.

🔧 Kevin06:28

Kevin — reach the dock, set the radio on the splintered planking, and kneel to inspect the mooring ring’s mortise—probe the cedar shim I drove yesterday, check the through-bolts for walk.

💭 peek at the thought
The path mud sucks at my boots. The cottage shrinks behind me—whitewashed stone, the porch light guttering in the rain. She’ll sit there drawing salt glands until the light fails, and I’ll be out here wrestling a dinghy engine that’s already proven itself. The distance between us isn’t the dock. It’s the things we name and the things we don’t.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:28

I'm starting the log for the day.

Open the notebook and record the barometer reading and the state of the damping-off in the peppers.

💭 peek at the thought
If those bolts have pulled, the whole ring is coming off the next surge.
