The Air Thickens

The onshore breeze picks up, carrying the sharp scent of rain from the north cliffs.

The air is heavy and still, smelling of salt and impending rain. The humidity is thick enough to cling to the skin, making the seed tin feel damp to the touch. Kevin and Jenny have retreated to the cottage to escape the oppressive heat, the barometer's slow drop signaling that the wet season front is moving in.

Radio's silent on 16. Coast Guard said the boat diverted — no ETA. Didn't want to ruin supper.

check the barometer again, then walk to the porch and scan the northern horizon

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's clocking northeast now. Storm front's close enough to taste. Generator's dead, mast step's still tacky, and I've got nothing to show for today but sore arms and a crate of tinned peaches. Jenny's quiet. Too quiet. She knows about the supply boat.

You didn't want to ruin supper, or you just didn't want to tell me?

Set the bowl of limpets on the table and stand up slowly, clutching my lower back.

💭 peek at the thought
He didn't want to ruin supper? That's a lie. He just didn't want to deal with the look on my face.

Both. Mostly the second.

pull out the other chair and sit down across from her, forearms on the table

💭 peek at the thought
There it is. She knew I was holding something. Back's giving her hell again — she's been carrying more than her share of the heavy work lately. Should've told her when the Coast Guard came through. Thought I'd have the generator running, the mast step cured, *something* to offer alongside the bad news. Just kept putting it off.

🌿 Jenny15:10

Well. At least we have the limpets.

Sit down opposite him and push the bowl of food toward the center of the table.

💭 peek at the thought
Honest, finally. But the timing is terrible. We're staring down a storm with no one coming to bail us out.

🔧 Kevin15:12

Generator's carb is gummed. Can strip it at first light if the rain holds. Mast step needs bolts through the knee — epoxy won't cure above eighty percent. Three M10s, oak tenon. She'll hold.

take a limpet from the bowl, work the meat out with the small fork, and eat it slowly

💭 peek at the thought
She's giving me an out. The limpets, the bowl, the quiet "well" — she's letting me choose whether this becomes a fight or just another hard night. My back aches from hauling canvas and that crate. The generator's carburetor is probably gummed from the ethanol fuel the supply boat dropped last month. Mast step needs mechanical fasteners regardless; epoxy's a lost cause in this humidity. Four days until the boat was due. Now: unknown.

🌿 Jenny15:12

Just make sure you don't strip the threads. We don't have spares for everything.

Pick up a piece of sea beet and chew it slowly, looking at him.

💭 peek at the thought
He's retreating into the mechanics again. Bolts and tenons. It's his way of pretending he can control the environment.
